Re: My experience with jhana and samadhi, comments welcome

My experience with jhana/samadhi is leading me somewhere I just need a road map and some fellow travelers. Hi, the best road map I've found, is from the Samannaphala Sutta. I'm only posting the section from 'abandoning the hindrances' on, up to the first jhana, but there is much more in the sutta. ...

Re: Which is the most important precept to get right for the Noble Path?

I had to choose between not killing, and not lying, and although my gut response was 'not killing', I chose 'not lying'. I have heard from two respected monks that, from the time the Bodhisatta resolved to become a Buddha in a distant future lifetime, right up to his eventual full awakening as the B...

Re: How to deal with a monk who's reputation is tarnish by a sexual scandl?

I think you find in a lot of these cases the person is eventually held to account. Takes a while, for instance look at Sogyal Rinpoche. Because some of these people become so high powered and celebrity like they think that the standards that apply to the rest of us don't to them I don't understand ...

Re: lay people should still try

Sometimes when I sit, I kind of intuit that with so many family troubles at present, it's unlikely (but not impossible) that the mind will be getting very calm in that sitting. But, i just treat it as practise, as always. It's all practise. Even if I can only manage good sati-sampajanna for a few br...

Although not the OP, I'm in a similar situation; thank you for that informative post, Bhante. Sounds do-able.

Re: Bhikhuni ordination?

Women were not in the beginning welcome by the Buddha to ordain as nuns into his Sangha! So, it should not be an issue of women's right. It is the matter of the Sangha. Thomas I can't find the quote offhand, but I recall reading that the Buddha was concerned for their safety (with good reason), tra...

And limit efforts to understand others to a few significant, close, mutual relationships. This makes sense to me. I need to understand my children so as to be able to better help them, to grow to maturity - so there's a benefit for me to be able to delve into their mental and emotional worlds, so t...

Living in an authoritarian dictatorship, under near constant surveillance, such as in Nth Korea, would quickly prove the value of the statement quoted by the OP. Because without protected free speech, that's how we could end up.

Yes, I don't think Antifa has set up any concentration camps, or burned any synagogues!! To clarify, I meant, Neo-Nazis, the small-time folks who hold rallies in the U.S. from time to time, I wasn't referring to the original, Third Reich Nazis, who make their modern admirers look like boys at a Hal...

No, you wouldn't!
If I didn't, I wouldn't keep checking the 'News and Current Affairs' sub-forum. For some reason, a good argument does spark my interest at times, although maybe I'll give it up for Lent. ;)

Re: question regarding not-self of volition and conscious action

Hello all, I've hit a bit of a road block when it comes to the experience of anatta and was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. During meditation, considering the body, thoughts and other formations it makes sense that they could be considered not self. I have little to...

The Left used to primarily be about economics - provision of basic services, progressive taxation, safety nets, workers' rights and the right to assembly, free speech, stopping privatization etc.... now it's increasingly about culture, identity classifications, social engineering and promoting stat...

Re: Bannon tells all in new book about Trump

What I have observed in life is how evil people collude together for mutual interests then nastily stab each other in the back at later times. If it suits their interests, that's the general course of events. https://gdb.rferl.org/4F020D3B-C1D9-498E-9A4B-32246DC75E96_w650_s.jpg "See, everyone? We'v...

Re: Bannon tells all in new book about Trump

Steve Bannon is a weird dude. He's a Nihilist. He says says things just to get attention. All that is true. But does it mean that everything he says is a lie? I don't know. What he says in this article rings true to me. There is a new book coming out, from a respected journalist. Quotes Bannon exte...

Maybe I was wrong to treat manas like an fully formed adult human being and maybe I should take your attitude and treat manas like a weakling. chownah I'm getting a lot of notifications, now I see why. It is our moral duty to ensure people who have raped children, for example, are properly punished, and serve a term in jail commensurate to how much pain and distress they inflicted on their victim(s); but, that doesn't mean we have to hate them. With really evil people like this, I just try to not ...

Re: 12th grade Topper renounces world

This is one of the gamble you do when you are young thinking that you found the right path. As a Theravada Buddhist I think Jains or Mahayanist are not in the right path. In the same way I may not be in the right path either. How to sort this out? The only way to sort it out, is to try it for onese...
