Listening to music generates demerit (bad deeds, bad kamma)? Listening to music breaks the precepts of virtue? Who listens to music becomes a bad person? Does listening to music generate demerit as much as killing and stealing?
Says who, please? First I've heard of it.

Re: Can a Buddhist drink alcohol in moderation?

You do not want others to go through the same consequences -- OK. But they will. So, why want something you can't control? My father is an alcoholic. Should I break down into tears every time he drinks? Hi Individual. I dont think wishing a substance abuser wellness necessitates anguish when it doe...

Re: perfection vs practicality

Striving for perfection, takes time and thus patience with oneself. However, beware of perfectionism, as in my experience, it ultimately hinders, rather than nurtures, progress.

Re: Is smoking tobacco/ e-ciggarettes a breach of the 5th precept?

I have read on this forum that smoking tobacco ciggarettes is not a breach of the 5th precept. Others disagree. Is smoking tobacco a breach of the 5th precept or not? How about e-ciggarettes (vaping)? Does smoking tobacco, or e-cigarettes, cause you to become intoxicated and thus liable to act heed...

Re: does anyone know of good asubha resources?

https://vimeo.com/220461359 Good asubha resource? Perhaps, but seeing that original image on this Forum, could trigger lust among some males. I know the intention is good, but this image is a bit intense, imo; perhaps a link to the video would be more appropriate, rather than just scrolling down th...

Re: Jordan Peterson - Developing Your Inner Psychopath

The Buddha would just advice that timid person to become an Anagami, so they don`t have any more fear or hate arising ever in their mind :). Regards. That might take some time, though. In the meantime, we do need to have the courage to stand up for ourselves, otherwise people tend to just walk all ...

Re: Is there a wrong way to becoming a Buddhist?

Hi MrKoala, the website 'Access to Insight' is full of useful information for beginners and more advanced alike: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/ Be patient with yourself. Seeing more clearly takes time for most. In my case, it's taken many years; I only just recently realized that yes, I believe wh...

Re: Animals and kamma

If animals can make bad kamma, it logically follows they must also be able to make good kamma (for example, when a family dog is being watchful and protective of the family members, or raises the alarm when a stranger approaches, it's being of service to those humans). If there's kamma in killing an...

It does seem that even today, 'silence means consent', ie, if you make no objection to a statement, the intention behind that statement holds?

Re: Boys in cave: the meditation perspective

Like so many around the world, I was relieved at the success of the rescue, and it's great to hear that the Coach was able to help them cope in the cave, using meditative techniques. However, since to my knowledge NO-ONE in the entire world will say this,WHAT WAS HE THINKING, bringing them in there ...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

You will find more detail in the Early Buddhism sub-forum. Wander over and :reading: for a while. As for myself, I'm willing to go along with the consensus on the history of the texts but I don't think the details matter too much because I think the core messages are close enough to the ori...

...................... Sometimes you misunderstand what i have written, Doodoot. OF COURSE the Buddha lived before Christ, do you think I'm stupid? dont cast aspersions. I was talking about OURSELVES, having grown up in a culture influenced by the hang-ups around sex, that the Church (or in your ca...

Re: Strong aversion against blue veins

I'm worried that in a new relationship I would "find" something else that upsets me (e.g. body hair, wrinkles, etc.) Even the airbrushed, 'perfect' models we see on TV, Internet etc have 'flaws' that we are not privy to. NO-ONE's body is completely without flaws, and in the end we all end up lookin...

Re: Sex before marriage

Why would a practising Buddhist have sex without commitment? The same reason a lay Buddhist might eat a piece of chocolate cake: because it is pleasant, and so long as it does not harm anyone (the Buddha's guidelines on this seem very reasonable) and is legal according to the laws of the Land, it's...

Re: Sexual intercourse with other woman with the consent of wife

Hi guys, There is a true story where a couple just got married. Soon after marriage, the wife is diagnosed with certain illness by the doctor. To make it short, because of the illness, the wife is not allowed to have sexual intercourse. The husband, however, got permission from his wife that, if ne...
