Re: how to meet buddhist singles

Try walking in the opposite direction: practice celibacy in body and mind, and women seem to come to YOU. It sucks but this is how it happened for me, the last two times.

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

Looking back to even my earliest memory of this life, I cannot recall even one instance of vinnana existing independently of an object. Consciousness is always *of* something. Thus, it does indeed arise in dependence upon the supporting conditions of sense and object being present. That being the ca...

Thank you for bringing that to my attention Bhante. I will be interested to hear which version Dhammaruwan chanted (the link on the topic page is inactive, but I will keep searching for his version).

Re: Are these monks chanting a slightly different version of dhammacakkappavattana sutta?

The version chanted by the Abhayagiri monks has the same differences compared to the CSCD text. I would suggest learning the version that you're most likely to use. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvOlVvKKBmM However, see this earlier thread. Thank you for those Bhante, will investigate. :anjali:

Are these monks chanting a slightly different version of dhammacakkappavattana sutta?

If you listen closely to the following, the monks' chanting appears to diverge from the text I obtained of the dhammacakkappavattana sutta from ati. It seems mostly in concordance, but appears to diverge somewhat at this place: "Now this, monks, is the noble truth of stress:[1] Birth is stressful, a...

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

Even just writing out what Hindus say regarding atman, has convinced my it's simply bollocks, and I think I'll leave off this line of inquiry for now, and simply practise.
Thanks for the help regarding the original topic.

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

My own refutations of the atman theory /perception. firstly, we have NO direct experience of this mysterious 'true self' . secondly, if the atman is full of 'knowledge, eternity and bliss' as hindus claim, how could it even have been 'covered over by a cloud of delusion' in the first place? thus it ...

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

Hello once more everyone, there is this feeling, this perception, of 'the self as possessing consciousness' as the Buddha puts it (a wrong view). I'm wondering if this is just the result of mental proliferation, ie, when we were very young, the thought "I am" didn't even occur to us; the perception ...

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

As a favour, I recall reading a sutta in which the Buddha rebukes a monk for claiming that it's the same consciousness that travels from one body to the next, between one life and the next, but I don't recall the name of it, if someone knows, could they kindly post a link?

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

I wish to sincerely thank everyone else who replied also, you have all contributed to widening my understanding of this issue. I'd say the most important thing that has been clarified for me today, is that consciousness isn't some standalone entity, but arises in dependence upon other conditions, wh...

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

But that quality of 'knowing' - how can it's disappearance be directly discerned? Let's discuss eye-consciousness, which is the most predominant and obvious to all who had read this thread. Eye-consciousness arises from contact between the visible object and the eye. When you see my post, at first ...

Re: How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

To define the term, this from the Pali-English dictionary: Viññāṇa Viññāṇa (nt.) [fr. vi+jñā; cp. Vedic vijñāna cognition] (as special term in Buddhist metaphysics) a mental quality as a constituent of individuality, the bearer of (individual) life, life -- force (as extending also over rebirths), p...

How can the disappearance of consciousness, be directly discerned?

Regarding this passage from the Maha-satipatthana Sutta: [2] "Furthermore, the monk remains focused on mental qualities in & of themselves with reference to the five clinging-aggregates. And how does he remain focused on mental qualities in & of themselves with reference to the five clinging-aggrega...

Re: Support in following the 8 precepts

Do it while living in a monastery or retreat centre, that's what they're designed for. So long as practising eight precepts does not inconvenience anyone else (for example, if not consuming food after midday leaves someone too tired to work, or care for dependents), then I can't see why ANY laypers...

Other administration officials justified the strikes on similar grounds, but Trump also described his decision as part of a broader effort to "end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria," suggesting that he may consider additional military action aimed at ending the Syrian war. http://www.theage.com....
