Re: What are the Karmic Effects of Lying?

Hello, I've been trying to compile a list of karma vipaka to help me keep the precepts better but I can't seem to find much information about what results from lying. Have you ever noticed how, if you discover that someone has lied to you often enough, and/or over a period of time, that you can get...

Re: A question about 'the fire clinging to it's fuel'

Hello all, I have a question, about a simile i heard about. It's regarding craving being like a fire, and that an arahant is 'quenched' because this 'fire' of craving has 'gone out', which is the state of 'nibbana', the flame being 'blown out'. ... Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

The only thing I can certain about is my Faith, I love the Buddha so much that when think about him I often cry  It can indeed happen. When I contemplate how distorted my view of reality was before, and how thanks to the Buddha's efforts in teaching the Dhamma, those who carefully handed tho...

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

Here's a helpful quote “Now what do you think, Soṇa? Before, when you were a house-dweller, were you skilled at playing the vīṇā?” “Yes, lord.” “And what do you think? When the strings of your vīṇā were too taut, was your vīṇā in tune & playable?” “No, lord.” “And what do you think? When the strings...

Re: Could someone help with finding chanting text of anatta-lakkhana sutta?

Hello all, I have trouble searching for things on the net sometimes, in this instance, I'd appreciate some assistance finding the pali text with the exact wording of the anatta-lakkhana sutta (pancavaggi sutta) in the version used, when it is to be chanted. Asking here will by faster than trying to...

Re: Could someone help with finding chanting text of anatta-lakkhana sutta?

Just so folks know, I had eye surgery, with the eye operated on now functioning well, but the other, still blurry as. Although I can read text easily now, the disparity between the repaired left eye, and the still very blurry right one, can bring on a subtle sensation of dizziness or even a slightly...

....expending any more energy on advising me, on something I cannot currently do in good conscience. Oh no, everybody loooves giving advice! Re: I heard that the Buddha said not to worship images of himself, if so, where is that recorded?

I think the idea that he forbade images of himself is a bit of a myth. It might be in accordance with other teachings, but is not as far as I know in the suttas. Are statues even mentioned in the canon? Was it even part of the culture so as to suggest itself to devotees? That's a fair point. Someth...

I heard that the Buddha said not to worship images of himself, if so, where is that recorded?

In my readings of the Pali Nikayas thus far, I've not come across such an injunction. I have, however, heard it from more than one serious practitioner, that the Buddha instructed us to not cast or worship likenesses of himself. I even heard someone say, that a Dhamma wheel or the Bodhi tree were vi...

Re: Sensual desire as a Layman

Hi easymitch there are some mental states I can simply watch arise and pass away; sexual desire isn't one of them. If I don't wipe a lustful impulse out of existence as soon as it appears, if I allow it to linger in the mind and body, it gets more difficult with each passing second to see my way cle...
