Re: Right Livelihood
Hi Tyler, have you thought of an ethical plan? I know there are some policies and groups who, for all purposes, choose to inverst in companies who are ethical, i.e. no arms dealers, only fair trade... you may be able to get a plan from such a company, or start investing in such a company oneself? y...

Re: Right Livelihood
Yeah, it really opens up a very interesting discussion for me. I know a lot of people are not as willing to really look at what the company they work for does necessarily and it probably hurts me in the long run in terms of finances since I can't help but consider intentions. I have always wondered ...

Re: Right Livelihood
You are both right. As Kim said, the precepts are not legalistic, thats why I am curious about where certain members draw the line. I will admit that the example about the 401k plan was something that happened with me. After graduating from college I took a job with a retirement plan and the guy sel...

Right Livelihood
Hey Dhamma Wheel, I have been doing some thinking about right livelihood recently and what everyone's role is in it. We all seem to contribute to wrong livelihood for someone in someway somehow. What do you think our responsibility is when money leaves our hands? For instance, many jobs offer 401k p...
Re: MCA RIP
Sad news and interesting to hear how he planted the seeds of Buddhism within your mind. I saw them play live in Bangkok some years back. I saw them in Dusseldorf about 8 years ago. It was a really great show. Lots of energy and it really showed the power of music to me. I was studying abroad from t...
MCA RIP
I dont know how many Hip Hop fans we have on Dhamma Wheel but yesterday Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed away. They were a big part of my childhood and Adam planted little seeds of Buddhism throughout their music with songs like the Bodhisattva Vow. I heard the words as a youth and became curio...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat
I searched Goenka retreat on the forum and got here. Someone recently told me about them so I thought I would see if you all discussed them before. I was surprised when I realized that so many of you that are active on this forum have experience with them. It is good to read what you all have to say...

I am currently reading Valis as it was the one that was given to me. I can't remember the last time I read a science fiction book. Maybe I just haven't found my niche within the genre yet. I will have to check your suggestions out Kim. =] Hi, Tyler, If you're coming back to SF after a gap, a great ...

Philip K. Dick
Have any of you ever read any Philip K. Dick? I read some when I was very young but don't recall too much. I have never been a huge fan of the film adaptations of his work but am more familiar with them. Recently a friend recommended that I try some out again. I cracked open one and it is pretty far...
