Re: German Language | Dhammatexte auf deutsch

Can anyone recommend specific print editions of Sutta translations into German? I am looking for physical books. And it would be great if you could attest to the quality as well. Thanks! As for the Majjhima Nikaya I will highly recommend Kay Zumwinkel, "Die Lehrreden des Buddha aus der Mittleren Sa...

Re: What is my ancestry? who cares.

Who cares? I care. I care about my ancestors. By examining the archives I can follow my ancestors several hundred years back. I can se who they were, their names, where they lived, often also how they lived. A few of them were wealthy, but most of them were poor people, toiling from day to day to se...

If I could travel in time, the first thing I would do, is to desperately try to find the Earth before my oxygen runs out. It travels at great speed through space, so even after a few seconds it would be gone ... :rolleye:

Re: Digital Pali Reader (DPR) software program.

I was wondering if anyone else here is using the Digital Pali Reader program. It works in conjunction with the Firefox browser in offline mode. Learning to use it seems to be quite difficult (at least for me!). I thought that it might be usefull to share tips about how to do things. Nowadays it won...

Here is a list: https://www.travelfish.org/sight_profile/thailand/bangkok_and_surrounds/bangkok/bangkok/1983 When I was there (10 years ago) the Buddhist Bookshop in Phra Sumeru Street (in Thai: Thanon Phra Sumen), directly across from Wat Bovornivet, had a good selection of Buddhist literature. Mor...

Scientists tend to jump to conclusions.
Rumour says that jumping to conclusions is accepted as a sport for the next Olympic Games.

Re: How Buddhism inspired David Hume

According to Christopher L. Beckwith there may be a connection Buddha > Pyrrho > Hume. I recommend reading his book, "Greek Buddha". Some of his assertions are controversial, but still interesting. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Greek-Buddha-Pyrrhos-Encounter-Buddhism/dp/0691166447/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=...

Re: Reading just the Tipitaka

Enjoy the Pali suttas. Here is a site where you not only find the texts in Pali, but also in several translations. Comparing different translations can be useful, but most useful of all is to read the Pali texts themselves.

Chakras are a Hindu teaching from the Yogic tradition, which has infiltrated some Buddhist traditions. Just ignore it, and learn what the Buddha actually taught.

Re: The Buddha spoke pali by Stefan Karpik

I have heard that in some remote parts of Norway near the Swedish border, they speak Norwegian with a heavy accent. Hop across the border, and they speak Swedish with a heavy accent. Yet the groups on either side of the border are actually speaking in exactly the same way! Is this true? The dialect...

Re: Most Compact Pali Canon

I once got a small publication from the Buddhist Publication Society, called "Buddha-Vacanam", by Nyanatiloka Mahathera, 1968. Soft cover, only 84 pages. It contains some essential texts in Pali, and I found it very handy and useful. There also exists an English version, "The Word of the Buddha".
