Free Will

Given that the five aggregates are anatta and that sankharas are vitaka, does free will exist? In other words, if all things arise dependent upon causes and conditions, and if those causes and conditions are anatta, then where does free will come into play?

Re: When I was 4/5 years old I had my life visons

I used to smoke weed everyday. I quit altogether and started mediating instead. Since then, I haven't touched it. Having distance from it, and having seen some of the benefits of meditation, it is clear to me that marijuana is just another kind of suffering. I hope you do the same, and I hope you pu...

Re: What are the hurdles hindering Dhamma propagation in the US?

A major hindrance to propagating the Dhamma in the west, in my opinion, are the people who want to modify the teachings to suit their kilesa.

Re: Trying to ordain at Wat Boonyawad -- Looking for some advice

I am here now. If you want a good taxi driver, just call Lek 098-984-5752. He drives many foreigners to Wat Boonyawad and used to be a monk. Very nice guy. You can get a Thai sim for very cheap at the airport. I got the happy sim dtac for like $15 for 30 days unlimited data. Ajahn Dtun is a very goo...

Re: Trying to ordain at Wat Boonyawad -- Looking for some advice

Does anyone have advice on getting from Bangkok to Wat Boonyawad? I looked on Google Maps and it gives me this route, however there is no train option https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Bangkok,+Thailand/Wat+Boonyawad+Bo+Thong+Chon+Buri+Thailand/@13.4340536,100.9418852,10z/data=!4m19!4m18!1m10!1m1!1s0x...

Trying to ordain at Wat Boonyawad -- Looking for some advice

I am planning to go to Thailand in about a month, with hopes to ordain at Wat Boonyawad. I emailed them and they told me to come visit first and see. I am trying to figure out all the things I need to do to prepare for this trip and it is somewhat overwhelming. (1) I still need to get my visa, but I...

Going Forth and Visas

If one were to go forth in Thailand, what visa should they get? Is it possible to get a non-immigrant visa instead of the tourist visa?

White Upasika Clothes

Does anyone know where I can purchase some white clothes to wear at the monastery? I live in California, USA, but am planning to stay at monastery in Thailand. I was hoping there was a website that might carry them.

Re: Buddhism and developments of science.

It's just as if a man were wounded with an arrow thickly smeared with poison. His friends & companions, kinsmen & relatives would provide him with a surgeon, and the man would say, 'I won't have this arrow removed until I know whether the man who wounded me was a noble warrior, a priest, a merchant...

Re: Is snuff an intoxicant?

I no longer smoke but I am still addicted to nicotine, I think about it often. Addiction is a very powerful and detrimental thing. Your health is a very precious, especially your respiratory system. Tobacco serves a certain purpose, calming the nerves, but meditation is far superior at this. Try to ...

Re: Is hell and hungry ghost realm to be taken literally?

Listening to the stories of supposed arahant monks of the Thai Forest Tradition, they speak of their experiences with ghosts and devas in a rather manner-of-fact way. I see no reason why there would NOT be imperceptible beings such as ghosts and devas, what a sad existence this would be if human bei...

Re: Bhikku Bodhi Dhamma Talk Los Angeles 10/20/2012

It was an amazing talk. Ven. Bodhi spoke on how we, as Buddhists, should not only fight greed, hatred, and delusion in ourselves but also in the greater society. His emphasis was to use compassion not only as a means of inner tranquility but also as a spur towards acts of goodness. I pray that the v...

Re: Pharmacological Aids to Enlightenment

While the topic of using nootropics as an aid to concentration is surely debatable, the idea of using Amphetamine (Adderall) as a meditation aid is simply ridiculous. I use to take Adderall, as I was prescribed it for ADD. I also used to meditate on it, and while it did allow me to maintain focus on...

Re: Drugs and re-enlightenment?

Do not use cannabis. Cannabis causes unarisen unwholesome states to arise, and arisen unwholesome states to increase. I know this from experience. It is not the path. Practice meditation instead.

Re: Porn Free for 90 Days

I do hope that you have indeed overcome your addiction, but I must warn you not to get over confident and let your guard down. It will probably arise again. More important than intellectualizing why you should not watch porn is to practice experiencing craving without doing anything about it. Watchi...
