Re: I'm trying to attain some inner peace here

Trying to meditate. The mind simply does not stay on the breath for a simple 5 seconds. I have been doing this for months. What is wrong with me? Vipassana has to be done after achieving some level of samadhi, right? I guess they recommend at least the first jhana before u do vipassana. I am nowher...

Re: THE UNIVERSE SHOULD NOT ACTUALLY EXIST, CERN SCIENTISTS DISCOVER

*sigh* Just reading the newsweek article and while doing so realized that, as is usually the case with physics discoveries, its probably just a matter of time until someone comes up with a way to weaponize asymmetry.

Re: The bare face of American kleptocratic imperialism

Im an American citizen and i never fail to be surprised at the astonishment the depth of the USAs moral depravity engenders. After slavery, genocide and human experimentation on unsuspecting American citizens, seriously whats left? The philosophy of manifest destiny guides the morality of my country...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

I was fairly alarmed about the environment when i was younger, but that pretty much subsided into resignation. I dont beleive that we as a species have the ability to constrain ourselves, not assigning any blame, we are just biologically programmed to use all the available resources. As an example a...

Re: Someone practicing Dhyana only ?

I would love to meet the master who can do only samatha, i dont think normal mortals even have the ability. As soon as the mind gets a little calmer, insight into self and the nature of reality is a by product and the calmer the mind gets the greater the degree of insight. "samatha only" is a mere c...

Re: LP Sumedho "consciousness is permanent" - thoughts?

Well if its there when ever you look anyway, whats the difference? I think the questioner (and some of the listeners, judging by the reaction) thought that the "permanent" version sounds a bit like eternalism ( sassatavada ) Ah right. I forgot that for some its more about verifying preconceptions t...

Re: LP Sumedho "consciousness is permanent" - thoughts?

Ok, maybe im just thick, but i fail to understand the practical, meaningful difference between "continous" and "permanent" (in this case). If its happening now and now is the only moment that can be experienced, somebody please explain to me how "continous" and "permanent" matter. EDIT: Correction, ...

Re: Individuality, Nonduality, Anatta, Nirvana

Ok then :) Individuality - at best a convenience for dealing with consciousness on a level that cant be accessed in other ways and by individuality i mean the sense of singular identity. Nonduality - a meaningless concept. Same for its opposite duality. It seems to me that polar opposites of this ki...

Re: Meditator with some experience beginning anapanasati

...That is how i started. With "who is this?". After a while the question kind of disappears and opens up and becomes tacit and is more of an attitude of inquiry. You might want to say that you practice with an attitude of inquiry. Using a specific, technical term like "huatou" in this fashion is c...

Re: Meditator with some experience beginning anapanasati

What the OP describes does not sound like a huatou (Chinese) or hwadu (Korean) or huatou practice. A huatou is a short phrase or question used in Zen practice, It may be the point of a koan or taken from koan which is a longer story. It may be created by the teacher or student or taken from literat...

Re: i'm a buddhist alcoholic

Me too :) Havent had a drink since Oct. 2, 1991. Find a meeting, do the steps. There are also more buddhist recovery meetings around these days. http://www.refugerecovery.org/ There also may be local sanghas in your area that have recovery meetings. Imo tho, there is no substitute for the steps, you...

Re: Spot the alleged connection

Please note that this section is called: Connections to Other Paths Exploring Theravāda's connections to other paths. What can we learn from other traditions, religions and philosophies? Clearly, other paths will differ from Theravāda, otherwise they would be Theravāda. The point of this section is...

Re: Where Did I Go?

I've been meditating for about ten years now but lately I get to a point where I have a very still mind, no thoughts and no awareness of my body. There's a feeling of losing myself, like there is no me anymore. It's very disconcerting. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences. Are ...

Re: Why should practice be framed by ready-made answers?

The three pillars of zen are: skeptical doubt to fuel inquiry, faith in the reality of awakening and the possibility of finding enlightenment yourself, and determination to follow through to the end. Imo skeptical doubt is the most important of the three. Sounds to me like you are in need of another...
