Re: Stephen Batchelor's “After Buddhism.” Yale University Press, 2015

Batchelors "Buddhism" has seemed to me to be an admixture of mostly materialism and sour grapes. Which is what many of us came to Buddhism seeking to remedy. Rather than seeking a way to see beyond the cage that his culture and education have built for him, he is trying to convince the rest of us of...

Re: What everyone participating in forums should understand

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to reform (or pause and reflect).

~Mark Twain

The real trick is being right without letting every idiot in the thread run it into the ground. Say your piece and quit.

Re: How much happy are you?

I voted 40%. I have some contentment, probably more than i have had in my life previous to this, but happiness seems to me a kind of excitement thats doomed to turn to its opposite. I dont really beleive there is much honest happiness to have in life anyway, that its really a kind of febrile denial ...

Re: My heart stopped while meditating (seemingly). What happened?

I have noticed states where the time between my heart beats seemed almost endless, but i think thats just a perception.
If it happens again just watch and wait. I dont know that anybody ever died from noticing their heartbeat slow down, at least nobody thats talking about it :)

Re: Ignoring jury duty request

Many jurisdictions in the US issue bench warrants for ignoring jury duty. Which is not really a big deal until you call the cops or get a traffic ticket and then you could be in for a hefty fine or even jail time.

but your position is on its face over-the-top silly.

Im fine with you thinking that, just trying to plant a seed. I realize that my position is not going to win me any popularity contests :)
You and I have something in common then.

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

As to the second proposition, it is simply frightening and sounds like what the Nazi's said about the Jews. I am not calling Morlock a Nazi, but talk of "eradicating" religious groups is not worthy of a "good argument" in opposition. Certain self-identified Buddhists are trying to eradicate the Roh...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I am troubled by the proliferation of anti-Muslim Topics and posts here. I have to assume the majority of Members also disagree with such posts. We need to take a stand against this, because it damages the perception of Buddhism, especially at a time when Buddhists are persecuting Rohingya Muslims....

Re: Dao De Jing or Tao Te Ching - Book of the way

You could apply the same critique you apply to the no-work hippy-dippy Daoist to the vinaya-observing monastic. Hardly ... alcohol is banned to the monastic, and following the path is hard work! The taoist license to act with "wu wei", to act without "without effort" and "without control", seems a ...

Re: Dao De Jing or Tao Te Ching - Book of the way

The Stephen Mitchell translation is the one i have read the most (have worn out two copies and my current one has dog eared pages and is missing the back and front covers) but i recently started reading the Red Pine translation. Comparing them sheds more light on the spirit of the thing. Red Pine: 1...

Re: I'm trying to attain some inner peace here

Trying to meditate. The mind simply does not stay on the breath for a simple 5 seconds. I have been doing this for months. What is wrong with me? Vipassana has to be done after achieving some level of samadhi, right? I guess they recommend at least the first jhana before u do vipassana. I am nowher...

*sigh* Just reading the newsweek article and while doing so realized that, as is usually the case with physics discoveries, its probably just a matter of time until someone comes up with a way to weaponize asymmetry.

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

I was fairly alarmed about the environment when i was younger, but that pretty much subsided into resignation. I dont beleive that we as a species have the ability to constrain ourselves, not assigning any blame, we are just biologically programmed to use all the available resources. As an example a...

Re: Someone practicing Dhyana only ?

I would love to meet the master who can do only samatha, i dont think normal mortals even have the ability. As soon as the mind gets a little calmer, insight into self and the nature of reality is a by product and the calmer the mind gets the greater the degree of insight. "samatha only" is a mere c...
