Re: Is there a good reason to call western monks Ajahn?

If we want to establish Buddhism in the West we have to give up attachments. Let those who wish use Bhante, let those who wish use Bhikkhu, let those who wish use Ajahn, let those who wish use Venerable, let those who wish use Sayādaw, etc. I have heard other expressions, e.g. sir or mate, but I usu...

Re: The Very Last Feast Of The Crocodiles

Ūmībhaya Sutta — The Peril of Waves “There are four perils, monks, to be anticipated  by one who enters the water. What four? The peril of waves, the peril of crocodiles, the peril of whirlpools, and the peril of fierce fish. ... “And what, monks, is the peril of crocodiles? Herein, monks, one who ...

The War on Error was updated on 9/11/18 with a new section on The Right to Cause Offence

Perhaps someone could start a thread discussing the value of patience?

Re: Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

Out of all the references posted here that supports a 500-year expiry date, we have to put aside Buddhaghosa and Milinda’s Questions since they are evidently after the Buddha. Whenever statements are made, we do not have to put them aside just because they were made after the Buddha. One could say ...

7. The Duration of the Religion “After the ordination of women, the Blessed One said that the pure doctrine would only last for five hundred years.²⁶ However, to Subhadda he said, ‘So long as the brethren live the perfect holy life then this world will not be bereft of Arahants.’ These statements ...

Re: Monastic Alms Round in the West

I have gone for alms in London for many years, but it is quite unlike traditional alms-round in Asia. When staying at the Burmese Vihāra in Wembley, the Indian Vihāra in Southall, and the Sri Lankan Vihāra in Ilford, I went for alms to various local houses, ate my meal in the house, and then returne...

Re: Are negative events always the result of bad kamma - i.e. abuse done to children, rape, etc?

One person's vipāka is the manifestation of his or her past kamma. Being abused is vipāka; abusing others is kamma. All beings inherit their own kamma, they do not inherit the kamma of others. Book of Ones “It is impossible, monks, it cannot happen that bodily misconduct could give a desirable, enjo...

Re: Mahasi method new york

Give the Bergen Street NY centre a call on Tel: (718) 622-8019 to get up-to-date information. Such centres often cater primarily for the Burmese community, but I lived for several years with Sayādaw U Paññāthia who is still listed as one of the monks there. His English is plenty good enough to teach...

Re: Prediabetes

Venerable Hammalawa Saddhātissa used to control his diabetes with Bitter Gourd blended as a juice.

If you find that unpalatable, it is much easier to eat if fried (but less effective).

Re: Isn't Asking for Money a Violation of Vinaya?

Even if it is freely offered, accepting money is a violation of the Vinaya rule, let alone asking for it. Donations can be offered to a charitable trust that runs a temple, or to a personal attendant (a lay person) who looks after his needs for travel, etc., inviting him in this way: “Venerable Sir,...
