What about people who do not believe in rebirth or think that "no rebirth" is the "more likely scenario" and lead a "good" life? Do they accumulate "mixed" kamma, i.e. "good" from deeds and "bad" from views?

Re: May someone tell me who this is?

Amulets are a scam. It is not the Buddha's teaching that such trinkets can bring good luck. If you treat the image of the Buddha or other saints with reverence that is the wholesome kamma of reverence, which brings good results, but no magic is involved. If you want to get good results, make good ef...

Re: What is the difference between God's plan and Kamma?

Buddhists don't know what kamma they did in the past, but we reflect on the law of kamma to come to terms with misfortune. Pious Moslems (and Christians) reflect that it is God's Plan . Looked at in this way, the concepts are very similar. Both are ways of rejecting blind chance as being an unsatisf...

Stephen Hawking's Ashes to be Interred in Westminster Abbey alongside Darwin and Isaac Newton.

Ironic for a well-known Atheist to be honoured by the Christian church in this way.

Re: Does negative thinking matter?

Complaining Rewires Your Brain for Negativity Repeated complaining rewires your brain to make future complaining more likely. Over time, you find it’s easier to be negative than to be positive, regardless of what’s happening around you. Complaining becomes your default behavior, which changes how p...

Venerable sir, a bar does not appear on the right to scroll down for this Sutta, although it does for the other ones that have the necessary length for one.
Thanks, but please use my forum for feedback. Posts here may be missed for some days.

Added the Gotamī Sutta — A Discourse to Gotamī

Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī requests the going-forth and eventually obtains it by accepting the eight weighty rules after the intervention of Ānanda on her behalf.

Re: Looking for a nice copy of the Jataka Tales.

Sacred Buddhist Texts is very dated now (Published in 1895), but is the only comprehensive translation of the Jātaka Commentaries that I know of.

You can find An Index and very brief summaries in the Dictionary of Pali Proper Names.

I can heartily recommend it. Aggacitta Bhikkhu studied Pāḷi thoroughly at Wat Tamao in Lampang, Thailand, and was the able interpreter for Sayādaw U Paṇḍita on his three-month retreat taught at Barre Mass. The published edition of the talks given by the Sayādaw in that retreat can be seen in my foru...

I added a couple more discourses today: The Sīha Sutta Sīha Sutta , a discourse that shows that the Buddha ate meat, and that a Stream-winner (General Sīha) can purchase meat. The Sedaka Sutta protect yourself from dukkha by practising mindfulness, and protect others from dukkha by practising patien...

Re: how is idle speech defined for lay followers

The commentaries describe it as talk without benefit. It is one of the ten unwholesome kammas (dasākusalakammapaṭhā) that can lead to the lower realms. Ledi Sayādaw, in his Maggaṅga Dīpani describes it thus: Abstinence from Frivolous Talk There are certain plays and novels that are of no benefit; th...
