Re: Let's play a game: Russian doll, ditch the books, cel phone, paper and pencil

Too much thinking is bad for you. Just memorize one verse.

“Blind is this world. Few are those who see clearly.
As birds escape from a net, few go to a blissful state.” (Dhp v 174)

Contemplate on the inevitability of death, and the uncertainty of life to remove attachment.

Re: Dealing with death and grief.

They usually offer alms or do other meritorious deeds in memory of the departed, and share the merit with them. See the Tirokudda Kanda

The Salla Sutta is a very helpful reflection for dealing with grief.

Bumping up this topic, with the reminder of the intent of this thread: In addition to sources already cited, anything from the canon related to the birth process & the termination in the womb of that entity; also any teachings on kammic results of such. “Here, brahmin youth, a certain woman or man ...

Re: Anuttara SammāSambodhi vs Nibbana

The Arahant has the tenth of the Ten Special Powers of a Tathāgata — a Fully Enlightened Buddha. Some Arahants have the other powers to some extent, but none to the fullest extent of a Buddha.

Re: Oral tradition V Writing

The oral tradition is more reliable than writing, that is why the Buddha used it. Think for one minute, would a fully enlightened Buddha who wished to preserve his teachings for as long as possible not use the most reliable method available? Writing was certainly known in his time. Those who are ign...

Re: Anuttara SammāSambodhi vs Nibbana

They are different things. Anuttara Sammāsambodhi = Incomparable Perfect Enlightenment. Only a Sammāsambuddha like Gotama Buddha realises this. It is called Awakening because it dispels ignorance and delusion by realising the truth regarding the mental and material processes, causes and effect, and ...

Re: will Buddhism finally ended up as a self-deceiving religion like others

Just the other day I was listening to a dhamma talk by a respected monk and he said the Buddha is always in first jhana no matter what. I shook my head and disqualified that teacher. Don't be so quick to judge. There is much truth in the statement. The Buddha Never Neglected Jhāna Hemavata asked wh...

Re: Amazing drop in BP by visualizing Buddha & chanting 'Budho'

Blood Pressure tests should be done when relaxed. It is recommended to sit and rest for five minutes before starting the test. Test both arms. For more accurate results, test twice and average the readings. Blood Pressure varies throughout the day. It will be lower in the morning after a good rest, ...

Re: Should nuns and monks be political?

Monks and nuns should be mindful, and teach the practice of mindfulness. It is OK to advise others how to live in harmony with others, and how to work for the greater good of society. Politics looks outwards at society in general and at the behaviour of other people in particular. It thinks that suf...

Re: No self theory do I get it right?

Not-self (anatta) is not a theory. It is a description of reality, an explanation of how rebirth is possible according to the doctrine of dependent origination. See Four Points to Bear in Mind about Dependent Origination. Mind and matter are governed by laws of cause and effect. The so-called self i...

No time limit is fine for mature people.

If people don't behave like responsible adults, their editing/posting rights should be removed.
