Re: Religious tolerance
The Buddha was only interested in liberating sentient beings from senseless samsara. That's it and nothing else. Not at all. Have you read the suttas? He have advice to householders about how to have a happy and healthy life, he advised devout lay-followers of other religions to continue to support...

Re: Religious tolerance
What a weird question. Why would the Buddha promote tolerance or intolerance of any religion? The Buddha was only interested in liberating sentient beings from senseless samsara. That's it and nothing else.

Re: Religion of peace
Summary: Islam - bad. Buddhism - good. I mean yeah, although Islam isn’t completely awful. It does have some nice bits. The nice bits can be argued away within the teachings of the Qur'an itself. That is how ISIS and its ilk can commit atrocities and still hold that their actions are holy and sanct...

Re: Idealism
Sorry but I'm not following your analysis here. The Suttas describe sense-consciousness arising in dependence upon sense-bases and sense-objects, which are derived from form. Eg eye-consciousness arises in dependence on eye and visible form The fact that there are sense-objects pretty much rules ou...

Re: Idealism
Wouldn't materialism in this sense preclude the existence of God? You are one step ahead of me. :embarassed: I want to correct this to: If the most fundamental level of phenomena is material, then mental phenomena are ultimately emergences of the material. It would also imply that there is no way t...

Re: Religion of peace
19:00 to 21:00 ...this says it all... Indeed. A good person will do good things. But, sometimes, religion can get in the way and stop a good person from doing good things. To understand why that can be the case, we have to look at what the religion teaches. I see religion like a package of viruses ...

Re: Do scientists say there is a reality not subject to time?
Do scientists say there is a reality not subject to time? Hi Sarath, just keep in mind the guidelines of connections to other paths. Perhaps you can find a way to connect this with Theravada? Thanks, SDC The way I understand Anicca is the word for time in Buddhism. What if there is a dimension noth...

Re: Distinguishing equanimity from indifference
When one has equanimity, one can have loving kindness or be compassionate EQUALLY towards all sentient beings. That is not the case when one is indifferent. One can only be equally unfeeling towards all others.

Re: Religion of peace
It is the views that a religion propagates that will determine whether it is peaceful or not. I think in general, humans are generally good. But they are also easily subjected to group-think. In that sense, nobel laurette Steven Weinbeg was correct to say that: “With or without religion, good peopl...

Re: Form is emptiness
Im not sure what they mean, they are just examples of the way sunyata is reified. Possibly it's due to the influence of other religious traditions that Buddhism has mingled with, and adapted to. Sometimes people talk about sunyata, and it sounds more like Brahman. I think that sunyata/empti...
