Re: confused by root gā vs gacchati in Margaret Cone Dictionary of Pali

for context of this query, how to understand "khaṇo vo mā upaccagā" in Dhp 315. I get that upaccagā is a root aorist (using Warder's terminology), but I don't understand Dr. Cone's explanation. Thanks! nagaraṃ yathā paccantaṃ guttaṃ santarabāhiraṃ evaṃ gopetha attānaṃ, khaṇo vo mā upaccagā...

confused by root gā vs gacchati in Margaret Cone Dictionary of Pali

I am basically self taught in Pāli ... looking at Margaret Cone's dictionary entries for [root]gā vs. gacchati, and adhi[root]gā vs. adhicacchati. I'm just confused. I thought the root of gacchati was gam.

Re: New Book by Bhante Gunaratana

The word "transform" is both vague and tenuous. It doesn't explain how, in what time, and to what degree. Neither does it solidly imply either 'heal' or 'vastly improve '. That said, I am certain the book is an excellent example of its genre, and a worthy instruction tome. From the excerp...

Re: Meaning of sankhara in dependent origination

Thank you everyone for a useful set of citations. I will take me some time to delve into them. The khandhā are not exactly a summary of dukkha . Dukkha is a pathway chosen out of avijjā and through taṇhā . But Saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā "in brief, the five aggregates subject to clin...

Meaning of sankhara in dependent origination

Meanings of Sankhara: All conditioned things, the 5 aggregates of clinging in summary, the 4th aggregate taken by itself, volitional formations. This is from Analayo's article in Encyclopaedia of Buddhism. http://www.buddhismuskunde.uni-hamburg.de/fileadmin/pdf/analayo/Sankhara.pdf Lately I have fou...

Kamma and Evolution - two explanations for the same thing?

I have long had the impression that the modern scientific story known as evolutionary psychology is, in certain respects, pointing to the same phenomenon as the theory of Kamma, both the Buddhist and previous Indian traditions. Evolution has a deeply tragic, pathetic aspect, similar to the wheel of ...

Re: Sri lankan Chanting and B.Bodhi

I researched the provenance of these Pali verses, and they are not canonical, but traditional. They are part of the preamble of the all-night pirit chanting popular in Sri Lanka. Bhikkhu Anandajoti has a nice essay about this tradition in the intro at, http://www.ancient-buddhist-texts.net/Texts-and...

“Have I gained super-human knowledge which can be specially known to noble ones, so that later when I am questioned by fellow bhikkhus I will not be embarrassed?” should be reflected upon always by one who has gone forth. Re: Arahants

A few months ago, Bhante Gunaratana advised us (bhikkhunis) to openly disclose our attainments to our colleagues in monastic life, whether meditation attainments or noble attainments. This was in connection with the last reflection of the Dasadhamma Sutta: "“Have I gained superhuman knowledge w...

Re: 1000 Bhikkhunis in the World

Bhikkhu Analayo stated the case very succintly in a brief remark at the recent Spirit Rock bhikkhuni ordination. He said the textual evidence about restoring bhikkhuni ordination is "ambiguous." Then, [me speaking] from great standards and from the example of many, many vinaya stories, the...
