Re: Overcoming Fear of Death

Technically, I don't think you can practice to overcome the fear of death. But if you earnestly practice the path, the fear of death will disappear at stream entry, or at least that's the traditional teaching. I could be wrong but I have heard that fear of death is only abandoned at the final stage...

But if she does go to the shariah courts, chances are they'll sentence her to death for apostasy, right?
No, there is no death penalty for apostasy in Malaysia. The two ultra-religious states tried to get such a law passed a few years ago; but there's no desire for it in the country as a whole.

Re: Is it okay to read buddhist text while i am using the toilet, having a smoke?

Leaving aside the sacred/profane question... I have found that reading of any kind while sitting on the toilet is detrimental to the functioning of ones innards. Maybe best to just concentrate on the job at hand...

“Bouncing cosmology inspired by regular black holes,” ....... the universe expands and contracts in a cyclical way.
Sounds like he's blaming it on the bossa nova.

Re: Detox

Your body is already equipped to detoxify itself, that's your liver's main task. Getting rid of 'toxins' (whichever they may be) through various detox products is a multi-million dollar business that seriously lacks any scientific justification. A professor of complementary medicine agrees: http://...

Re: Theravada center with emphasis on Metta

My information is also dated... haven't been to Burma since '05. I do not doubt that Shwe Oo Min Sayadaw was famous for his metta; but from my experience of a couple of retreats at S.O.M.Tawya, there was no metta practice taught there... only cittanupassana. There could, of course, have been beings ...

[...Last fall, TG did speak at Shaila's weekly meditation group in the same week he gave a day-long teaching at IMC (Redwood City, under the auspices of the "Sati Institute").[/quote] Hi cj, I remember you posting about this talk last fall, and I kept looking for it to appear on her website. Re: Mala beads

I once asked a Burmese man how he used his mala, and was told that it was for Buddhanusati. I wish I had questioned a bit deeper; but unfortunately I did not. Speculating on how it might work: if one bead was moved for each of the nine characteristics of the Buddha (http://bit.ly/2mW6ujI ) then one ...

Re: A manual of the Dhamma by Ledi Sayadaw

Thanks for that explanation, Bhante. It is a relief to hear that the traditional view conforms with what I had gleaned from my (albeit non-scholarly) reading of the sutta pitaka. The "controversy" existed only in my mind; since I had been sitting on the question for some years now. BTW... according ...

These noble individuals can also be laypeople, even non-human (see many instances in the Pali Canon). It is this community that is meant by saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi. So there is no obligation to take refuge in the monk. . There is some controversy on this point... at least amongst some Western teac...

Re: Academic ridiculousness

I can't say I follow all the nuances of this thread... basically I'm just an old deplorable. But I see some similarities with the talking-heads that Nassim Taleb (@nntaleb) has dubbed the IYI (intellectual yet idiot). "The IYI seems ubiquitous in our lives but is still a small minority and is rarely...

Just a tangent:... I listened to about half of the podcast; but it didn't stimulate anything in my current areas of interest. I did however like the next podcast: The Mindful Cranks episode 4 entitled "The Happiness Industry" with Will Davies. http://bit.ly/2jXrxRO

Re: Sutta References Compilation

I was trying to find sutta references to a theme on "attraction... danger... and release" which I dimly remembered as being a topic in more than one sutta. I searched the terms in a few sites (including accesstoinsight.org) without any luck, but finally hit paydirt with Wikipitaka (http://bit.ly/2eE...
