Re: Disparities and Similitudes between Śrāvakayāna and Mahāyāna
It’s not mere cessation in Theravāda. In fact it’s claimed to be filled with light. Metaphorical poetic light, or the manifestation of a perceptual image described as "luminosity" or "radiance" or "light" (or something else of the like) based upon contact at the doors ...

Welcome!
What was the topic of your PhD, if I may ask? (you can also write me in PM, if you don't want to disclose it in public)

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa
You probably noticed that "hunger" strikes a chord, and attempts to wake us from our stupor. I think words like "craving" even though we know the meaning, we don't know quite know how to transalate it into our emotions. Emotions sway us. Hunger appeals to emotion, and hence help...

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa
I fail to see what difference that would make. The whole business of meta-physics depends on similar connotations. Yes, you fail to see, but it makes fundamental difference. Parā is not semantically connected to para in any way, and doesn't have to do with meta-physics, para-psychology or else. The...

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa
If we examine the prefix Para, it means other; another; foreign; alien; outsider, the opposite shore; the other side. In MN117, para loka is mentioned in the description of mundane right view: ‘Atthi dinnaṁ, atthi yiṭṭhaṁ, atthi hutaṁ, atthi sukatadukkaṭānaṁ kammānaṁ phalaṁ vipāko, atthi ayaṁ loko,...

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa
Dear Pulsar, The scholarly work you undertook over the last two days, and to lay out the steps so methodically, the dedication to the task involved! I am thankful. Personal idiosyncrasies of the translator! that is an understatement, how that has affected the transmission of Dhamma over 2600 years. ...

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa
Thank you :anjali: So, why "contagion" is a wrong translation? If you take a look at the entry parāmasa in the old PTS Dictionary, it is perfectly fine: [parā+mṛś, but see parāmāsa] touching, seizing, taking hold of M i.130 (v. l. ˚māsa which reading is probably to be preferred, cp. Trenc...

Hi Bundokji, Sam has already replied regarding the compound sīlabbata parāmāsa . The problem here lies in the parāmāsa , literally over-taking/gripping/seizing, holding too fast . I believe you can better understand why the sīlabbataparāmāsa is the fetter abandoned by the sotāpanna through reading ...

Re: Nibbana Pre Buddhism Roots
Basically, in Ancient India 2500-2400 years ago, there were various teachings, philosophies and religions that taught about the ways to attain Liberation from the vicious circle of saṃsāra and about what constitutes this Liberation. The Buddha tried them and studied under the most distinguished teac...

Re: Buddhist cosmology and the "Many Worlds" school of quantum mechanics
Saying that matter does not exist and that only consciousness is real sounds like monism to me, which is not what Buddha taught. Just want to clarify that for Plato, matter exists, but its existence is ultimately akin to the existence of shadows or illusions. It is similar to the shadows on the wal...
