Re: Enlightenment or delusion - How to tell the difference?
I agree with the OP in that everyone who has ever overcome any type of delusion can easily extrapolate and reach this conclusion. Why should we believe that we have the capability to overcome all delusion? It seems impossible. But the Buddha said enlightenment is possible. I don't know whether I bel...

Re: Your clever body: Thinking from head to toe
Very interesting article & lots of good references. Kinesthetic memory Kinesthetic sense allows people to feel internally the movements of their muscles, joints and tendons. Thus, all physical activity, such activities as walking or bicycling, draws on kinesthetic memory to automate movement. As...

Re: The Buddha and Occupy Wall Street
The difficulty is in deciding just when an incrementally-worsening situation must be opposed and when dialogue has actually 'failed'. Have we reached that? Way past that, now to the point of total paralysis and inability to govern. And near-total corruption. The final nail in the coffin: http://www...

Re: The Buddha and Occupy Wall Street
Like you, Cooran, I'm not sure the Buddha would approve of the particular form of the present protests. But I do think he would agree that the present state of affairs justifies some kind of push for change. What is your objection (or what do you say the Buddha would have disapproved of)? Here in t...

Re: Is a Teacher required to practice meditation?
FYI: I am a "she". Even with different schools, I figure the Dhamma is the Dhamma and we eventually find the approach that fits for us. For me, I have always been interested in Buddhism and read about Zen years ago-- because that used to be pretty much what all the books were about...

Re: Is a Teacher required to practice meditation?
No offence intended since I do not find any advantage in identification with a tradition but I find it completely inconsistent to claim to follow Theravada but then practice with another tradition. I'm not really concerned with meeting criteria for a particular label. I'm more concerned about havin...

OK. I will have to think about it for a while though, I don't jump into these things very easily.tiltbillings wrote:If you get a chance to meet with these teachers, let us know how it went.octathlon wrote:Thank you, Tilt.tiltbillings wrote:It worth a shot and just looking into it will be an interesting experience and worth doing.

Re: Is a Teacher required to practice meditation?
The only Buddhist center I can find anywhere near me (30 miles) is Zen, which as Alex pointed out is a very different approach. Maybe it is different, especially is a koan type practice, but if they do Soto practice, you might find a home there. If there is a teacher at the Zen place, talk to him o...

Re: Is a Teacher required to practice meditation?
Another variation on this question I would be interested in is: As a practitioner of Theravadin Buddhism, is it preferable to go to a teacher of another school such as Zen rather than have no in-person teacher at all? Would all the differences in approach, beliefs and practices just cause more conf...

Re: Is a Teacher required to practice meditation?
There were several posts directed to me earlier, and I have just been too tired to write out responses. But I just want to let those people know, I did read them closely and I appreciate the advice, thanks!
