Re: Craving for Non-Existence

Re: Vipassana - to begin or not to begin?

cool, i'll make a tentative start then! It is best to go on a course, and spend some time giving it a go under the guidance of a teacher and/or a structured program. However, there is plenty you can do in the meantime. yes, this is what i'm hoping to do next year, this year however i'm going to be m...

Re: How necessary is Abhidhamma study?

hmm, i'm not sure if i'd used the word excessive though there a lot of terms and groupings that i often lose my way in. redundant...imo, i've found it helpful...i never really got a grip on rebirth (ofcourse, i don't mean to imply that i somehow now have complete understanding, i realise i have a lo...

Re: How necessary is Abhidhamma study?

i find it useful for mindfulness in day to day life. i was, and still am to tell the truth, a bit daunted by it but i think if you take it steadily then it's not quite as intimidating as you may initially believe.

hi Chris, thankyou for the essays.... it should be a quiet nightshift tonight so i'm sure i'll have the chance to read them then Annabel, thankyou for your perspective...highlighting both verses and casting them in another understanding for me is most helpful! Re: I'm all in

i saw in the new year playing poker with my housemates who helped teach me the rules. i'm not a gambling/wagering person - i've never bought a lotterey ticket, bet on horses, anything. we played with super small stakes about 3 quid each and i thoroughly enjoyed it. i quit at about 3am having really ...

Re: MN 135 - help me clear some things up!

hi Chris thankyou for your clarification, most helpful. so being intentionally miserly is the thing to consider in the context of verse 13. but are there suttas where the Buddha speaks of dana in the sense of helping those less fortunate than ourselves? or is cultivation of dana more often than not,...

MN 135 - help me clear some things up!

hi folks, okay so where my understanding is lacking is in verses 13 and 15 - 13. "Here, student, some woman or man is not a giver of food, drink, cloth, sandals, garlands, perfumes, unguents, bed, roof and lighting to monks or brahmans. Due to having performed and completed such kamma, on the d...

Re: OMG it's a rebirth thread

Greetings dumb bonbu, beginner's question - i'm slowly making my way through Abhidhamma in Daily Life, where i'm starting to learn about cittas and that no two cittas arise together, rather a citta rises, fades and then another immediately follows. judging by what you've said though Individual, i t...

Re: OMG it's a rebirth thread

Continuation of causality, however. Not atta or vinnana. Ayu (vitality) and vinnana (consciousness) cease at death, without remainder. beginner's question - i'm slowly making my way through Abhidhamma in Daily Life, where i'm starting to learn about cittas and that no two cittas arise together, rat...
