Re: Buddhists and politics

There is a view of recent Buddhist history in the west (and the US in particular?) that says that a number of early adopters of Buddhism in the US interpreted or privileged elements of the dharma that favored their leftist leanings. That form of western Buddhism would naturally be more attractive t...

Re: list wrong views that you might say 'smh' to

Ikeda is a Mahayana - SGI Buddhist teacher and author. I wouldn't expect him to have a Classical Theravada or even a Modern Theravada view of nibbana and enlightenment. His view is probably the mainstream view of his religion - sect.

Re: Gym and Buddhism

Say you are eating 2-3 eggs per day, that is 60-90 eggs per month or 1080 eggs per year. That means more eggs from eggs industry and more killing of male chicks. I fail to see "moderation" in this eating habit. Do I miss something? Thank you. That is a different topic than moderation in food. You a...

Personally, I just judge based in good & bad kamma performed, as taught in the Holy Koran, where, on the Day of Judgment, each atoms weight of good & evil performed will be weighed up.
So you are a Muslim?

Re: Trump. And why I hate him.

The fact he approaches it on an issue by issue basis, rather than on a basis of general like and dislike (and their associated knee-jerk reactions) is something I have appreciated, and it makes for more interesting reading and conversation. Yeah, it could be Trump's brash personality that makes peo...

I notice you have a 100% category but no 0% category. Anyway, hopefully no one is 0% but if we define 100% as someone being an arahant, then 0% would be more common than 100%.

Re: 10 perfections?

I think I read somewhere (maybe Buddhavamsa or a commentary) that in a distant past time both Gotama and Metteyya were contemporaries and Gotama was getting well established in all paramitas, but especially wisdom while Metteyya was most developed in metta and karuna, which is why Gotama became a sa...

.... DooDoot, Are you a Trump supporter? I thought you were a leftist, at least economically? You often quote about the Jewish conspiracy stuff regarding Zionist agendas, international banking, neo-cons, etc. You do know Kushner is Jewish, Ivanka converted to Judaism and Trump moved the embassy to ...

Re: Gym and Buddhism

I'm wondering does this mean some exercises/sports are not compatible with Buddhist practice? For example, if you do gym, you need a certain amount of protein intake, I think more or less that is not eating in moderation. Can you practice Buddhism and live your lay life happily at the same time? Th...

But alan . . . . why don't you tell us how you really feel? Come on, don't be shy. It looks like the GOP tax plan is going to pass. It will lower corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%. And then there are numerous other tax cuts in that bill. How are they going to pay for it? We just got out of...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

All precepts should be kept, they are all good. But I'd say there is a reason not killing is the First Precept. Killing any living being is the worst thing you can do to a person. No one should lie, but if you lie to someone, they are still alive.

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

I think those are false dilemmas and a sign of lacking creativity. There are more options as to what to say than lying, saying Yes, or being silent. One could say, for example, "I have nothing shameful to hide." Yes, I've heard Ven. Thanissaro say that as an option. That might work and could be wor...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

And I know some will say these hypotheticals are not realistic in today's world, but is that really so? Genocide and totalitarian regimes still exist. In those cases, they are not realistic in the sense of not accounting for the likely (or even standard) reaction of those seeking the refugees. But ...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

Here we go again, with the famous / infamous Jews hiding in the attic scenario. "Don't lie when Nazis come asking for jews to murder", I think that's a very one sided view of the situation. It only considers the kamma made from lying and doesn't consider all the kamma being made. It ignore...

No cold and no snow here. It's been around 72 degrees F (22 Celsius) and sunny. Global warming, I guess, we've been having very nice winters the past few years, but then we pay for it in summers with temps over 100 F.
