I guess we are all screwed then unless we become monks.
:?:

Did you mean to post in a different thread? You don't need to be a monk to follow the 5 precepts.

When I see curling at the Olympics I tend to think "brooming, sweeping . . . seriously; this is a sport?!"

I'll bet their wives say, "look at him sweeping; at home I can't even get him to take out the garbage."

Re: Are spiritual people depressed and unhappy and poor?

Actually, spiritual people and religious people tend to be happier. I won't link any studies, so no one thinks I'm cherry-picking, just google on your own and you'll see numerous studies confirm that the religious and greater religiosity tends to result in happier people. And it extends across all s...

Re: Challenging Position "Sotapanna Can break Five Precepts, it is possible, it can happen."

" One for whom these teachings are accepted thus after being pondered to a sufficient degree with wisdom is called a dhamma-follower, one who has entered the fixed course of rightness, entered the plane of superior persons, transcended the plane of the worldlings. He is incapable of doing any deed b...

Re: Loved this ❤️

You seem to be of the view that arahants are in some way less capable in dealing with the world than non-arahants. Can you be more explicit in describing how you see the arahants inabilities? Why wouldn't a lay arahant just keep on doing their right livelihood etc? You make it sound like a disabili...

Re: Loved this ❤️

Thanks DNS, so if the 7 day rule isn't backed up by the suttas and as the last paragraph of the article says, was partly put in place out of fear of the sangha losing power, then how much attention should we give it? I'm not suggesting that the sangha is pointless or should be done away with btw. It...

Re: Loved this ❤️

So you can't eat or drink if you're an Arahant? You can eat and drink as an arahant, but if you are not a monk or nun, there would be no one to give you that food and drink. If you held a job, you'd be subject to all the trappings and cravings of the 'rat-race' and all that entails, which I presume...

Re: Loved this ❤️

That's a good video for a quickie into to Buddhism for those without the patience to read a full book on it or to watch a 2 hour documentary of the Buddha's life, but there's one big error toward the end: Theravada does not say only monks can get enlightened. A lay person can get enlightened, it's j...

Re: Dumbbell Training

Weight lifting is geared more towards developing muscle mass and tone, and as such is not very effective as a primary weight loss strategy. I agree with justsit, weightlifting is a great exercise, but it's more about muscle mass and tone, not so much for weight loss. However, I have heard that musc...

If one considers that sineru is out of this world and is somewhere else then there is no way for us here on this forum to know anything about it except for our own fabricated thoughts based on this world.....so really there is not much point in discussing something we can know nothing about......or...

Re: Let's discuss Mount Sineru!

So interpreting the teaching regarding Sineru as a phenomenon perceivable with the divine eye seems totally within reason. But instead of considering this, or any of the other large ranges of interpretations (& there are a lot, because the suttas say very little on this topic, most of the informati...

Some can practice the 8 precepts on just a few days a month and then gradually hopefully add more days. 7. "Bhikkhus. Nor do they bedeck themselves wit...

We had that problem in the past, but it was fixed. It only shows that gibberish on the old posts, not any new links added. (see the link you just provided, no gibberish at end).

"Suppose, headman, a person would hurl a huge boulder into a deep pool of water.
