Re: Can a sotāpanna committ suicide?

How about Buddhism? all we have is the Buddha's advice in AN 4.192 . And that's still pretty good advice. As the saying goes, "don't meet your heroes" (because you'll be disappointed). I knew a person who followed a new age guru for about 25 years, writing back and forth, continual contact, then on...

Re: Can a sotāpanna committ suicide?

The modern trend of making noble states virtually an impossible state to attain, is mistaken, imo. I feel that the modern trend is actually quite the opposite: nowadays jhānas, magga-phalas or at least some vipassana ñāņas are attained during a weekend retreat. I would say it is safer to be overly ...

Re: The Buddha hasn't forgotten about us

The Buddha was not a materialist, nor a nihilist. She couldn't eat due to her depression. She wasn't trying to starve to death. It's interesting that she was a sakadagami and had depression. A modern trend found in some Buddhists is the "arahantification of sotapannas" believing sotapannas are almost on a par with arahants and here is the report o...

Re: Physical posture during seated meditation

Lotus positions are good because they provide the best balance, but as Sam Vara noted, it shouldn't be at the expense of your health or injury. Choose a comfortable position. In the past when I'd give some meditation instructions at IRL groups, I'd always remind the group how mindfulness is supposed...

What about the person who got the controller in his hand?
Perhaps the 5 aggregates? Edit, the aggregates are the image on the screen. It's an analogy, not a literal representation.

Are you running out of questions Sarath? I like analogies, some good ones by budo and whynotme. Rebirth is like a television. The remote control is kamma. The remote controls which channel is on. One moment you're Miami Vice . . . another time you're the weatherman on Groundhog Day . . . anot...

Although I would add that these teachings can fill in details to Buddhist meditation.
 Yes, certainly the other Dharmic paths are at least very good for Samadhi, imo. And probably Sila too.
