Re: A few questions...

In the Nikāyas there are no recorded cases of laypeople who attained arahantship and then continued to lead the lay life. Those who do attain it entered upon the homeless life soon after their attainment, like Yasa at Vin I 17,1–3. Wait a sec! Bhikkhu Bodhi notes that although there are no known ca...

Re: A few questions...

Even if we reject the idea that lay arahants are mentioned in the suttas, there is still the Commentaries, which definitely mention lay arahants. I do not contradict the commentary position that on rare occasion a layperson may even attain full enlightenment very suddenly, whereupon he would have t...

Even if we reject the idea that lay arahants are mentioned in the suttas, there is still the Commentaries, which definitely mention lay arahants. For example: 2. Re: Vipassana is not the way to enlightenment.

He appears to be a Jain guru? If so, then he's not very Jain-like in stating that enlightenment can be obtained in 48 minutes. He does mention getting established in the 5 precepts (Jain version which is very similar to Buddhist ones) and eliminating attachment & aversion; which is very similar, alm...

Re: Americans will never give up their guns.

No one in the US is aiming to take all guns away and give them to the State. That ship sailed a long time ago. If the government was coming for the guns, they had a prime opportunity during the EIGHT YEARS Obama was in office. And it DID NOT happen. Correct, in fact there was a vote on another assa...

Re: teaching to monastics vs lay people

In the Suttas, we see numerous times, the Buddha beginning with "Bhikkhus . . ." but that could be because that is who his audience was on those occasions.

The Vinaya includes some discourses and teachings which were clearly meant for monks and nuns, not lay people.

There are some passages in the Anguttara Nikaya that appear to suggest householders attaining enlightenment. Here's one of them: 012.04. Bhikkhus, the householders Bhallika, ... re ... Re: A few questions...

It is not possible to attain nibbāna in this present life without giving up the household life (& everything else). It is possible to attain lower stages of awakening where one has for themselves seen the goal & is guaranteed arahantship in future lives. It is possible to attain enlightenment / nib...

Re: Poll - If you had to kill in self-defense would you?

If a monk was physically attacked, the Buddha allowed him to strike back in self-defense , but never with the intention to kill. https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/thanissaro/gettingmessage.html What is the reference for this? In the Vinaya, Suttavibhanga, the 92 pacittiya (rules entailing...

Re: Americans will never give up their guns.

Why not just take the gun out of the kid's hands? There are already laws against under-age people (i.e., including kids) from owning guns. The problem is that many of the shooters obtain their guns illegally. There are too many guns in the marketplace. A complete and total ban of all guns is one pr...

Re: Americans will never give up their guns.

The Parkland school had an armed guard on duty and he didn't do shxt!! That and the fact that police were called 39 times to his house for various domestic issues and mental health issues. He should never have been allowed to have any gun, not just an AR-15. There is lots of blame to throw around (...

Also think this is best applied as a running long thread not 10 thread,
Perhaps worthy of a sticky in the Classical Theravada?
Go ahead and make a thread in Classical Theravada and if there's enough interest, one of us on the mod team could make it a sticky.

Re: Forum Section moderated according to Sutta

So if I get this right, you wanted a special section of the forum, which is "moderated" by Sutta and therefore, I assume, according to Classical Theravada principles? The problems with that and why there is probably so much opposition, is that it is still very subjective. Who decides what is the cor...

Re: Loved this ❤️

DNS, you were talking about the rat race. Is it ever possible to get away from that altogether even if you are a monastic? Monasteries need money to run and although monks and nuns don't directly handle money, they need it to survive. If you're a 'regular' monk and not an abbot, vice-abbot, preside...

There have been 578 visits to this thread. But there are only 18 scores! This forum is almost dead, There are about 10-15 people left posting. This is down a lot since i "left" in 2016 forum got trolled hard i think and it drove people away. Not all polls generate that much interest. Some have hund...

I guess we are all screwed then unless we become monks.
:?:

Did you mean to post in a different thread? You don't need to be a monk to follow the 5 precepts.
