Re: Gender and the Sakyadhita

So freed! So thoroughly freed am I! from three crooked things set free: from mortar, pestle, & crooked old husband. Having uprooted the craving that leads to becoming, I'm set free from aging & death. Therigatha 1.11 Mutta (Therigatha is a compilation of poems from enlightened nuns during the Buddh...

Re: Let's help eachother develop jhanas (take two!)

According to at least one sutta, a bit of competitiveness is good for progress: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an05/an05.180.than.html However, it doesn't work out too well on online forums, from my experience. Here's what I wrote in one thread over at DWM: The problem with competitiven...

Re: "Kill your parents, kill your god, kill your teacher." Fake Buddha quote?

Also sounds like a poor paraphrase of Kalama Sutta, i.e., don't go by something believing a teacher inspired it, a god inspired it, scripture inspired it, etc.

Re: Has anyone here mastered any of the jhanas?

You are absolutey correct, however Zom's messages have a secondary meaning depending on how you view his/her intention. He/She is not necessarily disagreeing with the monks/suttas I was making a general comment, not necessarily disagreeing with Zom. I agree with Zom that it is a gradual path and no...

Re: Has anyone here mastered any of the jhanas?

One extreme is that attainment of the jhanas is virtually impossible and on a par with arahantship. Another extreme is that they are very easy to attain. Like most everything, the truth is somewhere in the middle, imo. The Buddha's first experience of jhanas came when he was a child: "I considered: ...

Re: Dhammawheel is not growing - because it has zero SEO

But the trailing slash problem has not been fixed. This needs another code inserted into httaccess file. The one making it redirect on the trailing slash does not always work, so one might chose to redirect to non-trailing slash. Thank you for your recommendations. Can you provide an example of a U...

Re: Dhammawheel is not growing - because it has zero SEO

I found the problem. DhammaWheel does not have a proper redirect set up to redirect from the www version to the non-www version. Also no proper redirect for the trailing slash at the end (sometimes it's dhammawheel.com/, other times it's without a trailing slash). Webmaster fixed those. Someone com...

Re: Dhammawheel is not growing - because it has zero SEO

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have our webmaster look into this in a few days as he's busy at the moment. As Kim noted, it also has a lot to do with which sites you've been visiting as a lot of times as it gets cached. Also another big factor is traffic as sites with higher traffic generally get ...

Re: Is there another purpose?

That could be considered one of the misconceptions of Theravada Buddhist monasticism. Not all monks are "teaching-monks." Some meditate in solitary settings, some in monasteries. Not all have teaching duties or any expectations placed on them to give Dhamma talks or instruction. The lay people still...
