Re: Don't care about this world
You could become a renunciate sramana-sadhu, but you'd still be engaged with the world, albeit to a lesser extent, with receiving lunch alms from lay people, medical care, housing, books, etc.

Re: Muscular Christianity
Not sure if this counts as "muscular buddhism" but Zen has had a history of connection to the martial arts, going back to Shaolin in China and later in Japan; the mixing of Zen with the martial arts was sometimes latent, sometimes obvious. I don't see that so much apparent or at all with Theravada t...

Re: How should a Buddhist dress?
bhikkhuification of lay people. Lay people can wear whatever they like. In certain jobs a dress code is required and you don't have much choice, for example uniforms or professional looking clothes, office-type clothes, etc. It would be a pretty boring world if all lay people wore the same things, s...

Re: How should a Buddhist dress?
I do recall one Sutta where the Buddha or one of his chief disciples was about to give a talk at a lay woman's house and she was wearing a head cover. The bhikkhu considered this disrespectful and only gave the talk after she removed the head cover.

Re: How should a Buddhist dress?
I know this is a superficial questions, but I've been thinking; when I grew up boys had crew cuts and women long hair; boys pants, women skirts. I know in Islam there is a lot of crossdressing/transvestivism and what not. Does anyone know of any Buddhist dress code for laypeople other than the colo...

Re: theseus and anatta
Then there is the WW2 joke and anatta, :focus: Not off topic and good joke. It is related since it's dealing with the parts of a human and what makes a "person." Moderator note: some off topic posts, comparative religion discussion moved to the connections to other paths sub-forum...

Re: theseus and anatta
The if there is soul, there is something for sure. And Jesus brought dead alive according to Bible and cured blind and incapacitated if i remember correctly. You don't believe that though, do you? It is clearly hagiography. There are currently seven billion people alive today and the Population Ref...

Re: Buddhist view on Christianity
Jesus was as deluded as Epicurus For a deluded guy, He sure did a lot of miracles... Did he though? Or was it just hagiography? See also our comparative religions site: https://dharmapaths.com/ Buddhism has some of that too, for example a Sutta saying the Buddha walked and talked at birt...

Re: Does the posture matter?
Other traditions (Zen) emphasize the importance of posture, giving reasons from simple stability and comfort needed for longer sits to enabling right energy flows, conducive to a clearer and more vigorous meditation. Yes, I've noticed that too, especially in some Chan traditions. This tradition req...

Re: Is Sila enough to attain Nibbana?
“Another person has practiced the making of merit by giving as well as by moral discipline to a high degree; but he has not undertaken the making of merit by meditation. With the breakup of the body, after death, he will be reborn among humans in a favorable condition. Or he will be reborn in the c...
