Re: Is fishing breaking the precept?

In addition to the Christian concept of fish not being meat, this exists in Judaism too. Religious Jews don't mix meat and dairy in the same meal. Foods that are neither meat nor dairy are called 'parve' and can be consumed in a meat meal or in a dairy meal. In Judaism, fish is considered parve. I a...

Correct, but even if LePen won all her current voters plus all of Fillon's voters, that would still only be about 40% of the vote, not enough to win.

Re: Is Buddhism Nihilism?

See also this long thread with the same subject matter: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=21602 The poll of DW members is almost equally divided; it is not so one-sided at least among members here. (which of course does not mean that the leader in a poll is the necessarily correct view)

Re: Is Buddhism Nihilism?

Dhammapada Chapter V: Fools: 62 'I have sons, I have wealth' — the fool torments himself. When even he himself doesn't belong to himself, how then sons? How wealth? Yes, of course you can find numerous sutta references on the importance of ahimsa, not killing or causing to kill. I agree with that. ...

Re: Is Buddhism Nihilism?

On second thoughts David .. Buddhism is for sole purpose of becoming an arahant .. in this life or in as few lives as possible. It is an all or nothing religion. And we have to play inside that as long as we choose to be Buddhists. Somewhat correct in that yes, it is unwholesome to kill, especially...

So your opinion is follow the First Precept up to a point but disregard it on a case by case basis? Not arguing or commenting but just trying to understand the issue fully :namaste: :namaste: Somewhat correct; I believe one should always follow the First Precept, but on a case by case basis one mig...

Re: Is Buddhism Nihilism?

I am stating .. what terrifies me about Buddhism .. if I were to accept it to a T is that I am not allowed to kill even to save myself .. I disagree with your interpretations of the buddha's teachings. In his teachings you are allowed to do anything. The things you say are not allowed are not disal...

Re: Is Magga-Phalla (cessation) required for Stream Entry?

Magga-phala refers to 'path and fruit' so a sotapanna would have sotapatti magga and its resultant phala (fruit). Nirodha-samāpatti (cessation attainment) generally refers to the state beyond the 4 jhanas, beyond the 4 formless realms (sometimes referred to as the 5th to 8th jhanas); so cessation is...

Re: Facts VS fiction: Buddhist themes in Yuval Noah Harari's writings

I like how he points out the importance of the stories and the fictive language in human history; how humans have come up with all kinds of fiction stories to describe what is going on. For example, how there really is no such thing as "Peugeot" (car company) and employees, directors, CEOs...

Re: Why there is no God

This post I wrote for bashing religion on internet, but I think some of your Buddhists may benefit from it, so I post it here. ------------------ Which religions are you bashing? Monotheistic religions, Buddhism or both? What I see is just some rants relaying your positions of no creator-god and yo...

Re: Structured Debate/Discussion Thread (Experimental)

Those caveats are good and pretty much what we already have in place. Those who violate the above usually get called out by other members and includes being called out for logical fallacies. For example the things written in blue include ad hominems, red herrings, etc. The only problem is with this ...
