So far, so good.

It might be down for another short time a little later today for some more maintenance, but hopefully very short time, but we are now at the new server.

Re: Server migration Sept 22

Good morning, I just woke up... Have we been through forum bardo yet? :geek: Metta, Paul. :) We're in the bardo right now. :spy: Apparently the webhoster and webmaster are making this a very painless and seamless process, so far. Perhaps there might be no down time . . . We'll see in the next few h...

Re: How Dhamma-friendly is modern libertarianism?

Yes. There is no reason why people can't choose socialism and form collectives under libertarianism, if they wished to do so. Israel was like that. Hi David Did isreal have a libertarian Govt? No, it was/is a mixed economy (mostly free market) like most of the developed world; the point being made ...

I can't believe we yanks (U.S.) beat you (Down Under) on this one. We've already had full legal gay marriage for about a year or so.

Re: How Dhamma-friendly is modern libertarianism?

Yes. There is no reason why people can't choose socialism and form collectives under libertarianism, if they wished to do so. Israel was like that. People had a choice to enter into private enterprise farming, work in the city, or to commune-based communist (farming) kibbutzes. It worked out pretty...

Welcome back!

I believe in Pali it is usually spelled as avihiṃsā but ahimsa is also used.

Server migration Sept 22

Our webhoster has informed us that our private, dedicated server will be moved to a new facility. They assured us the databases will be safe, but just to make sure we did a full-back up yesterday of all sites. According to the webhoster: * Your server will be hosted in modern environmentally-friendl...

Re: What's the point of gay marriage ?

You can still have a straight marriage, if you so choose. No, you can't. One cannot unilaterally choose to get married, other than through blackmail, or by being a male citizen of a country in which the cultural norm is a unilaterally imposed marriage. One thing that these discussions about marriag...

Re: Drug liberalisation

U.S. prisons are overcrowded with people whose only crime was taking drugs. It should be legalized, however, I heard there are some drugs which make people very violent. I forget the name, something like bathsalts? I heard on the news some guy who took that and tried to eat his friend, literally bit...

Re: What's the point of gay marriage ?

If you are totally incapable of doing something, don't demand others be capable of doing it. That's the best part about legalizing gay marriage: you don't have to have one. You don't have to find a man and get married. You can still have a straight marriage, if you so choose. And those that want a ...

Re: What's the point of gay marriage ?

If someone were to marry two cats or two plants in a buddhist temple in your country, would people actually consider them married ? Nope, because cats being married is not really a thing, only people can get married. When it comes to gays it's the same problem. Only straight people can get married,...

Re: What's the point of gay marriage ?

Even if civil union provided all the legal safeguards, it is still denying gay people the right to get married. Churches and religious bodies are not forced to conduct gay marriages. A gay couple could locate a religious body, Buddhist temple or other religious institution that will conduct one. Or ...

Re: What's the point of gay marriage ?

The legalization of gay marriage is important because without that, it is relegating gay people to second class citizens, not afforded the same rights as others. In addition there are the important legal, economic, and social matters. In a marriage if one spouse dies, the wealth and property automat...

Re: Dhamma and Abortion

In fact Aloka, there doesn't seem to be many women voices in general on Dhamma Wheel. I wonder why that is? Actually, where are the female Mods and/or Admins? This place has a serious lack of balance. Not just with gender but it seems also to be a prerequisite to have a Moderation or Admin role one...

Re: If you could meet the Buddha

If a time machine were invented and you could meet the Buddha one on one, face to face, yet were only able to ask him one question, what would you ask? I've been thinking about this for years. I don't have any questions anymore that I would ask the Buddha were I to meet him. Why not? Do you have it...

Re: Buddhism, Socialism/Communism and Capitalism

In fact, it was socialism that bailed out the Capitalist banks during the GFC. Taxpayers save the banks, who got richer, even though the common taxpayer got poorer. If the banks got richer and the common taxpayer poorer, then I guess socialism failed yet again. It could have been left to the market...
