Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

This might be one way (my cursory attempt) to present a balanced approach, by focusing on the scriptures of a religion as has been done by some here. First a negative aspect and then a positive, wholesome aspect: The Sword Verse in the Qur'an: فَإِذَا انْسَلَخَ الْأَشْهُرُ الْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُوا الْم...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I believe DooDoot has a pretty good balanced position on all of this. In his post here: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=30614&start=60#p444973 He demonstrates things Islam has been accused of and how much of it is from cultural practices, not Islam. Another cultural action which is done...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

Read the first paragraph in the first post of this thread ..... I removed that thread (Muhammad - worthy of respect) from view for now, maybe permanently. Most of the team is away right now, so I went ahead and removed it and later it might get cleaned up and return or it just might stay away perma...

Re: Bodhisattva Path of Theravada

I meant he doesn't deliberately not progress, but rather progresses over lifetimes, perfecting the paramitas. He doesn't get full-enlightenment and then forego nibbana, the way a Mahayana enlightened master would, as far as I understand the concept and differences between Theravada and Mahayana.

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

Hi Mr Man, I don't read all the threads and posts here and I tend to ignore those type of threads, but as I said certainly some posts have crossed the line. I have only skimmed that thread and just in the past day, so the team and I will need to figure out what to do with the posts that crossed the ...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I think discussion of other religions is okay and even some comparative analysis, but it should be done civilly. Some posts have crossed the line, with use of rhetoric over logic. Certainly name calling and advocating urinating on a religious figure is inappropriate. All philosophies and religions s...

Re: Bodhisattva Path of Theravada

There is a bodhisatta aspiration that can be made in Theravada, where the person makes an aspiration to become a future samma-sam-buddha, but it is very rare and I don't think hardly any Theravada Buddhists openly admit to have such an aspiration. The big difference from that to Mahayana is that in ...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

If we want to be really precise, there is no Islam (and no Christianity, no Buddhism, no etc., no religion altogether), except in encyclopedias and dictionaries that operate on the assumption that the world is conveniently, neatly organized in clearcut categories. Correct, the best definition we ha...

Re: Right Speech: Getting Personal

I disagree with you. No one should be offended by this. We all have different views of varying degrees. But the poster should state why he disagrees, backing with logic and rational talk. You are incorrect. This is okay too, again, as long as the poster explains why he believes the other poster is ...

Re: More People Trained in Metta to Promote Peace

There is a web site similar to what you are describing: https://www.theofferingbowl.com/ People post their petition/wish for funds for participating in upcoming Buddhist retreats and events and donors can send them donations. It is sort of like gofundme or kiva, except that it is strictly for Buddhi...

Re: Buddha's skin colour

People who don't believe in the 32 Marks don't believe that any arahant lied, they believe the suttas or the portions of suttas mentioning the Marks to be inauthentic or non-literal. Sovatthika was referring to another topic, the 4th precept and was posting off-topic when he made that remark. He wa...

Re: There is nothing to do

If you look at the frequently found qualities in the 37 factors of enlightenment, Energy / Effort is listed 9 times; more than any other factor, even more than wisdom and concentration.

I believe many do still have contact with their adult children, not on a daily basis, but once in a while visits.

The topic title reminded me of this joke:

Re: Using Iddhi for Personal Gain

Is there even a Sutta reference that Iddhi powers could be used in such a way? Not in the Pali suttas. There is, however, a German translation of a Tibetan gterma called Die Große Rumpelstilzchen Sūtra . It was discovered in the mid-19th century by a pair of Hessian tertöns called the Br...

Re: Buddha's skin colour

why is there personal exegesis being offered on the dhammawiki site? I understand you have a very traditionalist view and there is nothing wrong with that. However, there are other views within Buddhism and within Theravada. The exegesis you are referring to is not limited to me. It is not a sole v...

I would think kamma-vipaka would prevent it from happening (according to Buddhism), even if one wished for it.

Mod note:
I have merged some of the very similar topics on the 4th precept into this one big one. And reminder once again to keep the posts to the issues, no name calling of one side as fundamentalists, etc or the other side as slanderers of the Buddha, etc.

Question is, to live with pain, mental illness, or die young with some joy?
Option 3: get treatment, enter an alcohol recovery program like AA and live long with joy.
