Re: What would you do?

Does anyone have any sutta references to back up the view that physical intervention is acceptable? I heard the Ajahn Sucitto story before and feel that it really highlights the value of Buddhist practice and the development of equanimty in dealing with aggression. Good on him. Best wishes Cal

Re: What would you do?

The Buddha said erradicate ill-will, he didn't say get punched about! But he did say let yourself be sawn apart without ill will :- Monks, even if bandits were to carve you up savagely, limb by limb, with a two-handled saw, he among you who let his heart get angered even at that would not be doing ...

Re: A Discussion of Western Buddhist Monasticism

The only time I entertain the possibility that this is a degenerate age is when it turns out to cost money to go forth into homelessness. :goodpost: Re. Tudong in the UK, this is an interesting site produced by a now-former Forest Sangha monk : - http://www.blisteredfeet-blissfulmind.net/" onc...

Metta vs Male/Female Argument

I have been following with astonishment the male/female arguments today. I normally use Dhamma Wheel as a source of sanity, compassion, inspiration and learning. I have found today's outbursts truly off-putting. I didn't want to cause offence so kept away from the discussion threads. But it now seem...

Re: What is your favorite sutta and why ?

First I read was the Kakacupama Sutta, specifically looking for the similie of the saw. It continues to inspire me to practice, such a long way to go... http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.021x.than.html Current "favourite" is the Kataññu Sutta, gratitude to parents. As a carer f...

Re: unethical job for greater good?

As far as I'm concerned, selling the jewelry ... no matter how high the price ... is just business. I'm not sure about finding a categoric answer in the Suttas, but I'd hoped most people had learned something from the banking crisis, credit crunch etc. Maximising profit is not without its negative ...

Re: Less Chatty Metta Bhavana?

I certainly find long phrases distracting, and keep it to something like :- May they be well, may they be happy, may they be free from suffering repeated while focusing on the relevant person(s) for a period. In the past, I found instructions from the FWBO (sorry 'triratna') helpful. See this page o...

He trains himself...relinquishment

Just reading this sutta :- http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn54/sn54.008.than.html "Describing how a monk should meditate on the breath, there are typical repetitions in the format He trains himself, 'I will breathe in focusing on relinquishment.' He trains himself, 'I will breathe o...

Re: The Success of Buddhism in the Western World

While I have heard and read some helpful things from Ajahn Brahm in the past, I feel his attempt to re-brand the 4 Noble Truths is a bit unfortunate. They've stood the test of time over the last 2500 years, so why re-write them now? I await his losing a couple of apparently unneccessary steps to mak...

Re: Meditating with noise

In a short book on meditation, Ajahn Amaro relates a story about a meditation session in London attended by Ajahn Chah in the 1970s, where the quiet was disturbed by rock music from the pub opposite. When the hosts apologised for the disturbance, Ajahn Chah apparently said :- You think that the soun...

Re: first trip to a monastery, some questions.

Hi There Sorry if this is stating the obvious. Like the Chithurst Monastery I regularly visit, the Abhayagiri website gives guidelines for visitors covering much of what you asked. Have a look at http://www.abhayagiri.org/main/content/C54" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , an...
