Re: the great vegetarian debate
Again, I don't see why there needs to even be a debate when it comes to Buddhist vegetarianism. People need to make their own lifestyle choices. As for myself, I would like to eat a diet that is both healthy and the most consistent with the first precept. And that's great if that's your interpretat...

I was already as concerned as I could get somewhere around 20 years ago. We're a bunch of damned lemmings.

Re: 2 very intelligent men
Atheists believe in materialism, which is not Buddhist, the dhamma doesn't teach materialism. People are always telling atheists what they believe. I'm an atheist. I'm not a theist, which is the only thing "a-theist" means. You cannot assume anything else about my worldview. You'd be better off jus...

Re: Quitting cigarettes
I smoked for 20 years. I tried to quit many times before I succeeded, but when I did, this is what worked: 1) Daily exercise. Helps with mood, sleep, etc. 2) Daily St Johns wort. Natural anti-depressant. 3) I started out with nicotine gum to combat cravings, then slowly reduced that and replaced it ...

Gonna be very tight.
I have a feeling something historically terrible is going to happen if we elect Trump. Ugh.

No doubt. Texas will be blue again (it was for a long time until about 1980) by 2024, if not by 2020, because of Latino immigration and their kids reaching voting age.Phena wrote:The Latino vote could be the crux of this and future elections in the US.

Re: POTUS 2016, part 3
It only looks like Trump is winning because he's already been given Texas and Hillary hasn't been given California yet.
If Trump doesn't get Florida, he's done. If he does, it could be close.

Re: Is Theravada Buddhism a Religion?
That's a much more important aim than an Alumni gathering... :anjali: Mike Well, of course it is. I wasn't arguing that the Marine Corps or the Texas Exes should be considered religions; the point was that the definition above is way too broad. There have been over 10,000 religions throughout human...

Re: Is Theravada Buddhism a Religion?
Theravada Buddhism does not demand blind faith from its adherents. Spiritual progress depends on the emergence of five cardinal virtues — faith , vigor, mindfulness, concentration and wisdom. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/conze/wheel065.html Saddha is well-reasoned faith, not blind fai...

Re: Is Theravada Buddhism a Religion?
It depends entirely on which definition of "religion" one prefers. Miriam Webster gives the following three: (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/religion) 1. The belief in a god or in a group of gods. 2. An organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of...

Re: POTUS 2016, part 3
Conservative Republican newspapers are not endorsing Trump, numerous Republican leaders and politicians are not endorsing him, some politicians who previously endorsed him are now retracting their endorsement and distancing themselves from him. This might be one way of 'punting' and hoping for some...

Re: POTUS 2016, part 3
The best part of this is the Donald Trump talking heads saying they hope he'll apologize and talk about how much he's changed in the last 11 years. Sure. He was just a young, impetuous 59 year-old when he made those comments. It's not really fair to hold him accountable for those remarks now that he...

Re: POTUS 2016, part 3
I think that declaring the GOP as gone is premature. Likewise. In fact, documentary-maker Mike Moore has already virtually conceded defeat for the Democrats. Michael Moore is wrong and will be proven wrong on Nov. 8 or quite possibly, he is just trying to scare everyone so that they won't get compl...
