Re: the great vegetarian debate

Again, I don't see why there needs to even be a debate when it comes to Buddhist vegetarianism. People need to make their own lifestyle choices. As for myself, I would like to eat a diet that is both healthy and the most consistent with the first precept. And that's great if that's your interpretat...

Don't forget to begin the meditation by directing loving-kindness to yourself.

I was already as concerned as I could get somewhere around 20 years ago. We're a bunch of damned lemmings.

Have you by any chance read Aristotle's De Anima?
About 20 years ago, lol.

The only ones I've read recently are Camus, Sartre, Plato, and Nietzsche.

Re: 2 very intelligent men

Atheists believe in materialism, which is not Buddhist, the dhamma doesn't teach materialism. People are always telling atheists what they believe. I'm an atheist. I'm not a theist, which is the only thing "a-theist" means. You cannot assume anything else about my worldview. You'd be better off jus...

Re: Quitting cigarettes

I smoked for 20 years. I tried to quit many times before I succeeded, but when I did, this is what worked: 1) Daily exercise. Helps with mood, sleep, etc. 2) Daily St Johns wort. Natural anti-depressant. 3) I started out with nicotine gum to combat cravings, then slowly reduced that and replaced it ...

Gonna be very tight.

I have a feeling something historically terrible is going to happen if we elect Trump. Ugh.

No doubt. Texas will be blue again (it was for a long time until about 1980) by 2024, if not by 2020, because of Latino immigration and their kids reaching voting age.

Re: POTUS 2016, part 3

It only looks like Trump is winning because he's already been given Texas and Hillary hasn't been given California yet.

If Trump doesn't get Florida, he's done. If he does, it could be close.

Re: Is Theravada Buddhism a Religion?

That's a much more important aim than an Alumni gathering... :anjali: Mike Well, of course it is. I wasn't arguing that the Marine Corps or the Texas Exes should be considered religions; the point was that the definition above is way too broad. There have been over 10,000 religions throughout human...
