Re: Visa Myanmar

you can find places to practice w/out meditation visa, but for long term and certain places you need to get one. when i was there they weren't called meditation visas. or rather there weren't meditation visas, only certain places that required government sponsorships/approved papers. not sure if the...

David -
Abhayagiri and Wat Metta vs the local thai temples or the burmese monastery in Austin sitagu. i'm not a buddhist scholar but i'm pretty sure this divide is pretty widely recognized.

Re: Why are most western Buddhists white?

I don't think it's blatantly racist to ask why Buddhism doesn't appeal to sopme sectors of society and what we as Buddhists can do to make it more accessible. This is what I assume the OP is about.

Re: Why are most western Buddhists white?

Ben - I haven't read the Vinaya in full so I can't get into specifics of what's there and what isn't. Shaving eyebrows i'm pretty sure is not in there as a req. for all monks. not sure lay people having to bow to the monks or wear all white to stay at monasteries; again 'what the buddha never taught...

Re: Why are most western Buddhists white?

this is the typical racial demographic i see at buddhist monasteries that i've been to in america: https://www.abhayagiri.org/community/residents Tassajara, and Wat Metta also only had white monks when I was there. At Tassajara (I realize this is a Thera. thread) there are many layers of Japanese af...

you might check out this as a entry point, unless you've read the tipitaka and can distinguish what's in it an what's not prima facie. http://books.google.com/books/about/What_the_Buddha_Never_Taught.html?id=BCoLAAAAYAAJ i agree i should have qualified this post with 'why are most meditators (e.g. v...

what madhyamaka does i think is allow for the inversion of the mundane/transcendental... just how N inverted the suprasensory/becoming... what schopenhauer had in mind with 'positive nothingness' and what heidegger had in mind with conealment/unconcealment for the completion of nietzsche's aforement...

Re: masturbation what's wrong?

what not masturbating as a rule does is gives you something to commit yourself to, namely, brahmacariya. but that's not limited to not orgasming at all so if that's what your commitming yourself to then there's no need to focus on that. all commitments are in an objective sense arbitrary. in a subje...

Re: Location of the Mind?

Mind and matter are dependent on each other. Asking for the location of mind is tantamount to asking "Where is everything?" There is no where you can point away from it and imo the question makes no sense. "Very well then, Kotthita my friend, I will give you an analogy; for there are cases where it...

Re: masturbation what's wrong?

i don't think right or wrong are particularly relevant to this question; i think this must be a western imputation. rather, i think observing effects of dukkha and tracing them to causes of tanha is more relevant. you know that pain is real by feeling a lot of it; you know that fire burns by putting...

Re: Goenka on elimination of sankharas

according to thanissaro (the suttas) only through stream entry can you 'eliminate' sankaras; otherwise, you can only develop 'equanimity' to them. that's what he told me when i asked about this.

Re: Location of the Mind?

So consciousness is localized in the brain according to the suttas? I remember reading Ajahn Amaro/Passano talking about the non-localization of CS in the island. It would have interesting ramifications w/ regard to rebirth if CS was localized in the brain whether causally, supervening, etc.

Hopping and Blinking in a Small World

When Zarathustra had spoken these words he looked again at the people and fell silent. “There they stand,” he said to his heart, “they laugh, they do not understand me, I am not the mouth for these ears. Must one first smash their ears so that they learn to hear with their eyes? Must one rattle lik...
