Re: Seeking advice on the best way to apply Ajahn Mun's dhutanga kammaṭṭhāna practice in modern times

I visited a forest Monastery in Sri Lanka last Sunday. The monks don't go on Charika but do live in the forests. Each Kuti is about 5 km away from the other. You can read about it here. http://bhaddekavihari.org/about The Chief monk will be in Perth for three weeks . He will be residing at Ajahn Bra...

Re: Seeking advice on the best way to apply Ajahn Mun's dhutanga kammaṭṭhāna practice in modern times

I had the good fortune of meeting this Venerable Thero twice and offering Dana. His student Venerable Nanaloka thero now goes on Charika . I saw him a few years ago, just about to leave on Charika, he was barefooted and not even carrying an umbrella. He only had his Bowl . It was very inspiring to s...

Re: Merit accumulation in our past lives

I am not aware of a sutta where the Buddha has said this. Maybe, this is mentioned in the commentaries, I think the aim of the priest was to make people aware of their store of merit which has been accumulated in previous lives. Here in Sri Lanka, you find less people meditating compared to the numbe...

Re: Trying to find a sutta.

Thank you Cittasanto for you response. I did see this in the link that was provided above. I have been asked to write an article for a little booklet that will be published for the Katina ceremony . The title of the article I have chosen is the "Gradual training." I felt that the one about the rain ...

Re: Trying to find a sutta.

Thank you santa100 and plwk for the links. I faintly remember as if there was a smilie given by the Buddha where he says, just like the rain which falls equally on flat land, hills and rivers, one must give alms to the monastics , the poor, the rich and animals.one mustn't choose but give equally to...

Re: Black Lab Consciousness

Thanks tiltbillings for the link.

However, I am unable to listen to it as I am short of hearing.it is a pity as I know there are many good talks on Dharma seed.

Thanks Phil for the transcribed section. That was very helpful.

Re: Where does 30 minutes a day of meditation lead ?

MarkNZed wrote I'd love to hear of stories of laypeople who have made significant progress on the path. I've not yet been able to track down writings on the topic by a "householder" but I'm guessing they exist. There is a website where letters written between a laywoman and a meditation teacher are ...

Re: The 8 precepts

Thank you for your response Culaavuso. yes, it does seem that the sutta is referring to these precepts. I find that when i undertake these precepts in daily life, I am more aware of my verbal intentions when dealing with Society.

The 8 precepts

Here in Sri Lanka, There are two types of 8 Precepts that are observed. One is the Uposatha sila where you undertake the 8 precepts. The other one is again 8 precepts, but different to the Uposatha Sila known as Ajivathamaka Sila. Is this sila mentioned in any of the Sutta? Thanks in advance. with m...

Re: Offerings of food to Buddha Statues

I don’t think you do this type of rituals, if you are a Sotapanna. Sometimes I do rituals (Bodhi Puja) as this may help someone else to relive their psychological pain. Hi Sarath, From what I understand, what is meant by rituals that is abandoned when one becomes a Sotapanna is the wrong belief that...

Re: Cynthia Thatcher

What happened? She was a good kalyana-mitta of mine too, many years ago when I was in Denver. She even stayed in one of my apartments doing some solitary retreats under the supervision of Achan Sobin. I lost contact with her unfortunately after I left Denver in 1998. She was too young to pass this ...
