Re: Theravada Buddhism and Social Engagement

Here at our temple we are often engaged in various activities. Yesterday we had a hospital send some staff here so that children from the local school next door to us could get free medical check ups, including eye tests, blood pressure checks etc. The Abbot of our temple is involved with many commu...

Re: Correct form of address

Hi Jack. The kneeling down would normally happen if the monk is seated, even in Thai temples. However as was said above, often just placing the palms together in Anjali is fine, especially if 1- The monk is standing, or 2- you are just passing by.

Re: Maranasati (Mindfulness of Death/Charnel Ground Reflection)

I have heard that in Sri lanka there is a morgue somewhere where the monks are allowed to go and view the cadavers.
Not sure where I heard this but perhaps one of our Sri Lankan Bhantes can confirm this.

My Abbot is improving

Hello everyone. I thought that I would update you all in regards to my Abbot, Bhante Dr. Apisit. Bhante came out of hospital yesterday and came up to the temple to pay us all a quick visit. Although he has a way to go before getting back to good health, he has improved greatly since I last saw him, ...

Re: Are monks allowed to touch their mothers?

I think that monks are not only allowed to touch their mothers, but all other women, on the proviso there is no lust. The Vinaya rule is quite clear. I believe that in Thailand, cultural development has taken the observation of this rule to an unnecessary extreme. A woman is not even allowed to giv...

Re: My Abbot is ill-please send metta

Hi everyone. Thankyou for your kind thoughts.
Dr Apisit remains ill in hosital, but is starting to feel a little better.
I think we will be without him here at the temple for a while yet.
Sorry I have been away for so long, but have just been getting in some practice.

Re: Meaning of 'sukhita'

I feel sort of bad because I am always being helped by people on this site and I dont seem to have any particularly useful knowledge to give back. You might consider your contribution to be one of asking questions others haven't thought to ask, and thereby pulling even more out of the forums than w...

Re: Meaning of 'sukhita'

Thanks very much anyway. Language is such an odd thing, especially for something which is essentially innate and necessary. You would imagine it would be much simpler. Jack Hi there. Perhaps you could contact Bhante Yuttadhammo at http://www.yuttadhammo.sirimangalo.org" onclick="window.op...

Re: Meditation Visa in Thailand

Is there a special visa for people who would like to stay in Thailand for meditation? I kind of know it is possible for people wishing to become monk. Can anyone shed some light on the details of these rules? In order to get a visa to stay in Thailand for meditation, you should apply to a center he...
