Re: the great vegetarian debate

A "lifestyle" of being tortured on a farm is better than a wild animal?? That's interesting...it's also false. Furthermore, wild animals on the savanna, and what happens with them, is completely and totally irrelevant to how humans abuse and kill animals. The comparison as done above is not appropr...

Holy Spit, they're expensive!
Don't do it!

Yes, I agree. Similar statues can be found in the big DIY centres with outdoor gardening sections - and also in some of the PDSA charity shops in the UK, for less than that !

I just thought i would share the video because it provides an interesting viewpoint similar to whats found in Buddhism (about the five aggregates not being self essentially), but emerged independently.

Sam Harris has connections with Joseph Goldstein and also with Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen .

Re: Did Buddha ever know about the hypnotism?

I remember that one of the forum members (Aloka) is a certified hypnotist, so maybe she could shed light on the similarities and differences between hypnotism and meditation if she wants to. I'm a qualified hypnotherapist, not a hypnotist like the people who do stage shows, supposedly making member...

Re: What is delusion?

Hi all, of the three unwholesome roots - greed/aversion/delusion - I am still unsure of what is even meant by delusion in the buddhist sense. Is delusion the process of creating the "Self" image? Is delusion making ourselves neurotic? Is it ignorance - that we dont even know we are creating sufferi...

Re: Just a Hello

I haven't been here for a long time. I just wanted to say a quick hello and to thank everyone who sent prayers and chanted for me awhile back. As you can see, I am still alive and still struggling. May we all be at ease. :namaste: : Good to hear from you again, sattva! May you be well and happy :he...

Re: Buddhism and memory

Is there any sutta that directly use the term "living in the present moment"? Here: SN 1.10 Arañña Sutta: A Face So Calm [Devata:] Those who abide in the forest, Peaceful, living the holy life; Those who eat but a single meal; — why is it their face is so calm? [The Buddha:] They do not grieve over...

Re: How to deal with ignorant brutes in a discussion

I tend to find that you can turn a debate from a 'slagging match' to a 'discussion' by doing the following: Actually being interested in their viewpoint even if from your perspective it is wrong. This usually breaks down people's barriers. Especially if their viewpoint is usually subject to derisio...

Re: How to deal with ignorant brutes in a discussion

All problems you have with other people or the world stem from your own addictions “In contemplating right understanding (samma-ditthi) I like to emphasize seeing it an an intuitive understanding and not a conceptual one. I have found it very helpful just contemplating the difference between analyt...

Hi rightviewftw, Its possible that having a look at chapter 7 "Attending to the Deathless" in the book "The Island - An Anthology of the Buddha's Teachings on Nibbana" by Ajahn Pasanno and Ajahn Amaro might be helpful. https://www.abhayagiri.org/books/451-the-island With kind regards, Aloka :anjali...
