Re: Let's brainstorm ways to benefit others during this covid crisis

This is in connections to other paths, so I can post about ideas that are more Mahayana. You can save the lives of animals and dedicate the merit to ending the pandemic. You can also try repeating mantras such as for the Medicine Buddha or Tara Buddha. Also, keep in mind that because of the pandemic...

Re: No reason to practice Buddhism without rebirth

When I was in my teens it kept creeping me out that some day I was going to breathe out and stop. No breathing in to follow. Then I'd imagine what I wanted everyone to say at my funeral, but knew that they wouldn't. It all came down to knowing how alone I was going to be and without help. That was b...

Re: How about this approach for the Nikaya?

It is the Diamond Cutter Sutra because it is sharper than diamonds. It cuts through the hardest substance known at the time. I knew that the Mahayana has a tendency to look down on the Theravada, but it surprises me to see it when the feeling is mutual. Probably because I still haven't ever seen The...

Re: How about this approach for the Nikaya?

It has been a while, but I used to practice with a Soto Zen group. They valued the Heart and Diamond Cutter Sutras. At first they sat to meditate more and did housework between sits. Walking and sitting meditation. My mind always seemed cleaner after sitting with them. I'd even start to see auras wi...

Please don't knock putting in time on the cushion. Zen is fast and direct. It has plenty of teaching, too.

Re: How about this approach for the Nikaya?

From time to time I plan to read the Suttas as a way of changing the way I think. It leads to changing my feelings, beliefs, values, and actions. Gradually. But it isn't meditation. Hearing, contemplation, and meditation. Those are the three stages of incorporating wisdom. You can spend years on the...

Re: Seeking rebirth in Tushita heaven

Pure Land Buddhism had two goals. Rebirth in a place conducive to becoming a Buddha is the long term goal, for after this life. The short term goal is to learn to see where you are in this life as a Pure Land. I haven't ever heard of a Theravada equivalent. Have you been watching the tv show "The Go...

Re: Stream enterers and sexual desire

It is strange to me that sexual pleasure is so much more difficult than others. Before covid you could go into a crowded restaurant and watch people eating at all the tables. No big deal. But just imagine if they were all having sex instead of eating. It is more like being an addict and watching som...

Re: Robes Made From Recycled Plastic

On one hand, recycling is good. On the other, natural fiber clothing holds energy and meditating in it repeatedly gives advantage.

Some day I'll get used to it saying who posted in the thread most recently. Normally it is the one who started the thread. So I was saying to myself, what on earth could you have done, DNS? But now I see what happened.

Re: help with a mother's request

Is it just Mahayana or in the Theravada do you do good things and dedicate the merit for someone else? Like giving money or saving animal lives. Because you can do that for people who have passed on.

Re: Holding each other accountable in daily life

It isn't a good way to get along with people. It is like the bit about the Zen hog dog stand. After he orders, and this is the part everyone knows, where he says make me one with everything. He pays with a twenty. Where's my change, he asks. Change must come from within.

Re: Ingram, et al - "Hard Core Dharma" & claims of attainment

It is rare to know what Enlightenment really is. Most people have strange ideas about it. And then only a few of those really try to get it. The failure rate is almost perfect and nothing beats a daily practice for a constant reminder of this fact. Places like this forum should be full of finders ra...
