Re: lie, watching porn, hearing music, playing games compatible with trying to attain first stage of enlightment?

Well, you definitely can't lie. If you're a sotapanna, you don't break the five precepts. That is part of what being a sotapanna means. lie is debatable. lie based on compassion leads to well being. lie based on deceiving leads to evil states. if a monk says to kids in house buring in fire to come ...

Re: Can one practice with excellent resources, but no personal guidance?

Nearly everyone will need a teacher in the beginning.

However, the amount to which one needs to rely on a teacher varies.

It isn't a one size fits all approach.

The biggest issue with not having a teacher is because you can so easily fall prey to delusion.

It doesn't break any precept; it's just a frivolous and useless action based in delusion.

Re: Anagārika for life

You can go and take the eight precepts from an abbot, and then return to your normal environment.

Alternatively, you can take the eight precepts on your own.

Don't call yourself an anagarika until you can keep the eight precepts with consistency.

Re: What is Nāga world and Supanna world? where are they loacted?

Nagas are snake deities that reside under the Four Heavenly Kings; particularly under the god that guards the Western direction (Virupakkha.) The Naga, Mucalinda, guarded the Buddha after his awakening. https://i.redd.it/r2d2hwo51fc41.png [html]https://www.reddit.com/r/Buddhism/comments/eskbho/buddh...

You can't erase past negative kamma, but you can "override" past kamma by creating new positive kamma.

Re: Using the Mala beads in original way . .

You can use mala beads for this practice. It isn't a common nor formal practice in Theravada. However, it should bring some calm to your mind.

You can recite 'Buddho' 108 times. 'Buddho' is a common meditation object in the Thai Forest Tradition.

Re: How would you place your hands when bowing/saluting the shrine/showing respect to monastics

It depends on the country. In Thailand, there are three different ways in which one can greet (the Thai word is ไหว้, which is pronounced as 'why/wai' .) When bowing to a monk and statues of the Buddha, you lower your head until your thumbs are in between your eyebrows. Make certain to bow slightly....

Re: Breath speeds up during meditation, why?

If it's nothing big, then why does it captivate you? Just stick with the breath. The purpose of meditation is two-fold: to fabricate samadhi, and aid in the develop of wisdom. The breath becomes subtle in the fourth jhana. However, the subtle cause which hinders your progress is your mindfulness sli...

Re: Intrusive Thoughts

Intrusive thoughts are difficult. First, you need to have very strong mindfulness to stop your thinking. Once you have that, you can catch the thoughts and realize it is just a thought. The problem lies not in the thought itself, but the narratives around the thought. The narratives and commentary o...
