Not always. I've often found that the mis-match between the image and the reality can give rise to positive states such as "renunciate sadness".
A lay having renunciate sadness??

Re: The benefits of silence

Since you mention it again, where do we get the idea of how people should be? Isn't this a constructed image based on past experiences and memory, a conditioned response? Isn't this the kind of thing that causes dukkha? When the reality doesn't match the image, there is suffering, disappointment, d...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

Imagine if someone wanted to find a certain temple purported to be filled with treasure and this person found the journals of a great explorer that apparently contain the account of the finding of this temple. They followed his directions maps and paths contained in the journals to a tomb full of t...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

If you're saying the untrue is non-functional, I agree. Behind every 'useful fiction' is a true principle which governs the function. But you can think of a useful fiction as something like a proximate cause. If I believe that God punishes evildoers, and abstain from crime as a result - it makes se...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

As long as the practices work, does it even matter? The whole thing could be a complete fiction, but if the practices delivered the end of suffering, it wouldn't matter at all. The concept of "useful fiction" is highly problematic. Even a supposedly useful fiction is still fiction. Relying on somet...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

]What are the arguments that suppose that the Pali Canon is not the literal word of The Buddha? Or that there is nothing at all in the Pali Canon that goes back to the Buddha? We can't prove that any statement in the Pali Canon was made by the Buddha, because we don't have any document (for which w...

Re: It is better to stick with people who disagree with you?

Being around people who have different veiws from your own is a great teacher. In what way is that a great teacher? I meant that you learn about yourself. When someone disagrees with you, you generally react to them in some fashion, and this teaches you about your own attachments. It's also a great...

Re: Mailing a book to death row inmate

I plan to order a sutta collection from amazon.com and have it sent to an inmate on death row. Are you sure he won't have to pay for the postage/shipping? Someone once sent me two books as a gift via Amazon. But as it later turned out, it wasn't really a gift, because I had to pay the postage/shipp...

Re: Krishnamurty-inspired off-topic posts

I've listened to a few minutes of UG, read some JK, and read hundreds of your posts, and to me they all have the same evasive quality of not actually answering questions, but instead asking questions to put the questioner off balance. A Prasangika(-like) approach gets old quickly ... However, only ...

Re: It is better to stick with people who disagree with you?

I would imagine that Jaggi Vasudev sadguru gets out more than you, maybe you need to get out more to know what he is doing, and has done and how much he gets around. Is he ever faced with an opponent on equal grounds? Or does he only face them when he is in the position of power, like in the interv...

It might be that scepticism and devotion are not exclusive or even opposites.
In Zen, for example, they aren't. In Zen, they have the trio faith-doubt-determination. An example.

Re: Krishnamurty-inspired off-topic posts

It's rather ironic that you say all these things yet you are here on a Buddhist forum where almost everyone acknowledges that there are people such as the Buddha and others throughout history who have come to the end of dukkha and live differently. Try not to judge yourself into a corner. It's a lo...
