and that one must also have those convictions, or their practice won't work for one. That's not true, however. The heart of the practice is simply accurate observation of what's going on in our own minds, and its success is quite independent of our specific religious or moral framework. That's why ...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

But is there any sutta that combines moral exhortation _and_ a teaching on anatta? I think that description would apply to MN 22 /.../ Also to any sutta that reports the Buddha giving a "graduated talk on Dhamma", i.e., one on dāna, sīla, heavenly rebirth, the peril of sense-desires and advantage o...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

Meditation doesn't happen in some kind of metaphysical and moral vacuum. Are you sure of this?....how would you know? Granted, some people are very capable of psychological compartmentalization. For example, I once heard a Catholic say that he wants his future wife to take the pill when they "make ...

Yes, some people do it like that. Others, as Mike mentioned, will prefer to follow the calendar of the particular tradition that they're affiliated with. For example, the Dhammayutt calendar if they're involved with Wat Metta or some other Dhammayutt wat, the Mahānikāya calendar if they're involved...

On topic and as to the relevant discussion in this Topic, the "Oppression Olympics" graphic includes the following literary quote from "Animal Farm:" All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. The word "animal" has a meaning. The graphic refers to groups including black peo...

Anatta and amorality

Greetings. This has come up in another thread: I'm not sure what you mean by this....I'll take a guess that you mean that remorse is an example of hiri and ottappa. If my guess is correct then my saying: " if you feel remorse it is best to view that feeling as not mine, not self, etc." could be modi...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

Why doesn't the Buddha give this advice to Rahula when he advises him to reflect on the consequences of his actions? Rāhula was only seven and newly ordained, so the Buddha gave him an exhortation on sīla. It's in the Cūḷarāhulovāda Sutta that he is given an insight-related discourse that leads him...

I've no idea. But I think you may be identifying a problem that some of these secular techniques seem to jump immediately to a rather advanced form of practice. http://photogallery.indiatimes.com/photo/47296492.cms I suppose this guy, for example, has considerable meditation attainment too ... Why doesn't the Buddha give this advice to Rahula when he advises him to reflect on the consequences of his actions? I think because they belong to different levels of development of the gradual path. Good sila is required to develop the calm and insight enabling the letting go... And JKZ, for exam...

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

I am curious as to whether those who are critical of MBSR actually have any experience of it? "I tried it, but didn't find it satisfactory because...( insert reasons )" seems like a more credible response than "I just don't like the sound of it". I can't do it, because I have no idea how to be "non...

Re: Activism supporting Rohingya

The topic seems to be, for the most part, about a defenseless group of people called the Rohingya who are being persecuted & ethically cleansed for control of oil & gas land; If all this is about oil and gas, then this has nothing directly to do with the Rohingyas; because anyone who would live on ...

The poll is intended to illustrate how various different comments may reasonably be taken personally.
The poll is statistically irrelevant.

Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

I can't find any sutta reference which refers to "mere thought" or "just thoughts". The adjectives "mere" and "just" are your additions which you use quite often if not all the time. What they do is to trivialize something which the suttas do not trivialize. What is sensed through the six sense doo...

Besides, do you think Bhante Dhammanando has said anything unwise? I like the comment, because a good slap on the face can wake us all up. I don't see the issue. I exempt myself from the instruction. I do _not_ want to be that someone else at whose expense someone indulges in their hauteur and pris...
