Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

From personal experience, I say that a lie of any magnitude gets me into some sort of trouble; and that this trouble is, as a rule, greater than the one I was initially trying to avoid by lying.

Maybe I'm just a bad liar, but I never got away with a lie, no matter how small.

Re: Taking Refuge and Precepts

One can take the 3 Refuges online here: https://what-buddha-said.net/sangha/Refuges_and_Precepts.htm This only explains the external procedure, but not the justification for taking refuge; it also doesn't seem to say anything about how to take refuge without this seeming like a condemnation of ones...

Re: Those Self-Absorbed Buddhists

So, how could it be that this result was not apparent in this seminarian’s experience? Ha ha. I was once discussing with a Christian, also about anatta doctrine, suggested that he listen to a certain Dhamma talk about anatta. His reaction? This is from memory, but it's almost verbatim what he comme...

Only one more week to the winter solstice!

Yay! Only one more week to the winter solstice! And then the days will finally begin to get longer! Maybe I'm just getting older, but this winter has been really difficult for me. This year, I seem to be less able to deal with the cold and the dark. Where you live, do you have a proper winter with c...

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

I do not mind friendly competition, but that is not at all what I find on DW these days. In order for debates/discussions to be fundamentally friendly, participants must be united under a rather obvious common goal, ... and not just any goal, but admirable friendship. While admirable friendship may...

if the forum could just return to exploring the Dhamma that would be good.
But what would that be -- "exploring the Dhamma" -- in an environment where there exist no teacher-student relationships?

How to teach children to think for themselves?

Greetings. From another thread: Frankly, I can think of a lot of things that should be taught in schools before religion even comes into the curriculum. It's better to teach kids how to think for themselves, and give them the analytical tools to let them choose their own views and beliefs, rather th...

Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

One thing that I used to really enjoy about this forum was that we seemed to have ordinary members here who wielded as much or more influence than the staff, almost solely based on their knowledge of Dhamma. Sadly that is no longer what carries any weight around here - at all. The most impressive a...

Re: Right Speech: The Person in the Ball

As stated, "personal responsibility" for one's words/actions appears to be a topic people wish to avoid discussing. What would such taking of personal responsibility look like? I don't think anyone here is avoiding this topic, but I do think that at least some of us simply don't understand personal...

Re: Right Speech: The Person in the Ball

This may be the way some people rationalize for themselves why it is acceptable to speak unkindly to others, however it reflects a fundamental misunderstanding, in my opinion. Discussions about Right Speech are not about the "hearer" adjudicating, over-analyzing, or setting personal demands or expe...

Say, 3 billion vegetarians surely would make a difference. Top Problem is not that simple. Animal skin fetches more money than the meat content. Animals are raised not only for meat consumption. Re: How to exercise sense restraint in instances where aversion might arise?

I understand what you are saying but this is not release from the cycle of perception and the penetration into 'things the way they are'. Analayo's quote is still a conceptually conceived position replete with subject/object and an experiencer. It is not the same as cessation of continuity, which i...

Eh. I'm surprised I got the results I did, I'm not sure why they came out that way. I answered "Not applicable" in many instances and thought that most questions were about not particularly important topics. Like I said, I wonder what the test's methodology is.
