Re: Let's make this forum more Buddhist!

To that end, what I ask of you personally, if you're amenable to doing so, is to hold metta, karuna and mudita in your heart for all past, present and future members. If you hold grudges against anyone for any of their involvement in any of the above, please consider releasing them for the benefit ...

It looks like he will get away with it on a technicality... TOS2g speaks only of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha - no mention in there of wheel-turning monarchs. My mistake, sorry.
He clearly called for hatred, which is undhammic!

Re: Buddhism and alcohol

Have you considered going to Austria? Your westerly neighbours have an excellent state health service, coming in 9th place in the World Health Organization's ranking of national healthcare systems, while Hungary ranks a miserable 66th. As far as I know, one has to be an Austrian citizen in order to...

Re: How to teach children to think for themselves?

How is "to teach someone to think for themselves" not a contradiction in terms? "To teach someone how to drive a car" or "to teach someone how to swim" are different than "to teach someone to think for themselves." "Thinking for oneself" requires that one doesn't rely on others (freely, or by force)...

Here is why I hate Trump, and why you should, too.
This post is clearly against the TOS:
2. Speech
g. Attacks against the Buddha, Dhamma, or Sangha, which violate the Intention of this forum (See Section 1. Intention for details)
Indulging in hatred and calling upon others to do so is undhammic.

Re: The Truth About The Rohingya Lie

The myanmar gov't hasn't stopped the violence whoever is doing it and there are more people on all sides that seem to be getting into the act.....and you can believe me that making statements like "I can't really be sure who it is or even if it is happening at all because it is just news blah blah ...

Re: The Truth About The Rohingya Lie

The "who" part is the most boring part, yet it's the aspect most people seem hung up on... and for what purpose? We know what's kusala, we know what's akusala... so why all the hyped-up drama, accusations and aspersions? Because it hit so close to home. It's Buddhists, of all people, that are being...

Re: Those Self-Absorbed Buddhists

Which is what you were talking about, weren't you? They are supposed to be focused on others - their neighbours - as well as God and Jesus. That's what Jesus taught. Personally, I think Christians are the self-absorbed ones, and that their focus on others is superficial. To be sure, being self-abso...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

All precepts should be kept, they are all good. But I'd say there is a reason not killing is the First Precept. Killing any living being is the worst thing you can do to a person. No one should lie, but if you lie to someone, they are still alive. And many people kill themselves because they were b...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

Yes, I've heard Ven. Thanissaro say that as an option. That might work and could be worth a try, though I highly doubt it would work. The Nazis would just laugh and insist on a 'yes' or 'no' answer or start killing you and anyone they find in the house. Nazis are not there for benevolent means and ...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

But it's still good to do thought experiments and hypotheticals to test a principle, to examine if it holds under all circumstances, in all possible cases. Except that in these discussions, it doesn't stay at thought experiments and hypotheticals when it comes to the negativity that is generated by...

Re: Those Self-Absorbed Buddhists

I think the OP is failing to distinguish that the remark about Buddhists being self-absorbed was made by a Christian seminarian, and as such coming from a very specific perspective. Other people, not Christians, have other complaints about Buddhists, and those complaints are not about the supposed s...

In which case, see the above quote from Mark's gospel. Focus upon one's neighbour seems to be very important, not just on God and Jesus.
But with that, we're back at the mere ought.

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

What is the intention when misleading the Nazis? It is to save lives. What is the intention by saying yes they are in the attic OR remaining silent? The intention is to protect the 100% purity of your precepts. One is compassionate, skillful means. The other is selfish. I think those are false dile...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

I know I might be biased having lost some family members in the holocaust but there are plenty of Dhamma teachers who agree with this assessment too. And there are others who disagree with this; it appears to be one of those 'hot topics' in Buddhism, along with the veggie debate and others. And I k...

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

When my 4 and 8 year old child asks me again if Santa is real, should I tell them the truth. This is a serious question, as my wife and family would look upon me as cruel as it would definitely destroy their excitement. You basically have to make up for other people's lies ... Surely there are more...

Re: Only one more week to the winter solstice!

How have you been handling the dark? Accept it as it is. For some this is a struggle and they migrate somewhere. This spring and summer, I have probably spent more time outside than ever before, and I think I may have gotten conditioned to all the sunshine, to the point where I would prefer if it w...

I'm still hesitating and confused. Going to hospital at Christmas is horrible feeling, and I'm very scared of going to hospital. Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

From personal experience, I say that a lie of any magnitude gets me into some sort of trouble; and that this trouble is, as a rule, greater than the one I was initially trying to avoid by lying.

Maybe I'm just a bad liar, but I never got away with a lie, no matter how small.

Re: Taking Refuge and Precepts

One can take the 3 Refuges online here: https://what-buddha-said.net/sangha/Refuges_and_Precepts.htm This only explains the external procedure, but not the justification for taking refuge; it also doesn't seem to say anything about how to take refuge without this seeming like a condemnation of ones...
