Re: Lead us not into temptation -- not anymore?

I grew up as a non-Catholic among Catholics, and it was precisely this part of the prayer that I took issue with from early on. The Catholics (but also other Christians with whom I have brought this up) tried to shut me down, and expected that I just go with the wording as it is; and that the failin...

Re: Lead us not into temptation -- not anymore?

As God is omnipotent, by not stopping Satan from leading us unto temptation he *is* actually helping to lead us into temptation! In most basic terms, if God runs this Universe, and as such, everyone and everything in it, then God runs Satan as well. So presenting Satan as some kind of God-independe...

Lead us not into temptation -- not anymore?

Lost in Translation? Pope Ponders an Update to Lord’s Prayer ROME — It has been a question of theological debate and liturgical interpretation for years, and now Pope Francis has joined the discussion: Does the Lord’s Prayer, Christendom’s resonant petition to the Almighty, need an update? In a new...

Re: What everyone participating in forums should understand

I think people should read and watch more Sherlock Holmes books and tv series, to get a better feel for what discussion can be like. The reason why Holmes is such an effective detective is his method of investigation, a crucial factor of which are his (often heated and quite unfriendly) discussions ...

L.N. I think you maybe confusing the views of the majority of the participants with those of the Admin/Mod team, but therein lies your answer.
Some people perceive _anyone_ in some position of power as authoritarian/right-wing.

Re: Why are far-right political views so predominant on DW?

Why can't people with views on the far right or far left discuss here without calling into question the character of anyone who disagrees? Some of the discussion here is just baffling in its hostility and unfriendliness. For one, this is just the usual mode of discussion between those two sections/...

Re: How to exercise sense restraint in instances where aversion might arise?

Young children thrive on bad order. Actually, one can assess the state of one's health from the smell of one's bodily secretions. You can tell there's something wrong when your pee and poo don't have the right kind of pee and poo smell. (In so-called civilized cultures, people seem to have suppress...

Re: How to exercise sense restraint in instances where aversion might arise?

A smell that one perceives as foul normally indicates that there's something wrong, and that it may be dangerous for one's health. No smell is something mentally conditioned. Young children thrive on bad order. Some people hate fish others hate meat etc. I think it's more complex than that. For exa...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

Yes, there is also the point that the path might not appear all that appealing to one gripped by addiction. There are some problems that we need to sort out first. My teacher says that we need to alleviate some of the obvious suffering in order to stop flailing around and become stable enough to pr...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

I'm not sure why you believe I need to provide you with an answer to your question. You don't have to provide me with such an answer, but it would be nice if you would. You speak with great confidence, hence I assume you have an answer to my question (but for some reason refuse to reveal it). I am ...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

No addict wants to stop using. They just want to be able to use there drug of choice without the consequences that go with it. That is the denial of the addict. That this time will be different. The belief that they will one day be able to use responsibly. This is the great delusion of every addict...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

Again, I agree with the general direction of the argument here, but maybe this is about turning the "bad" self into a "good" one rather than the goal of the dhamma, which seems to be about transcending both good and bad types of self and achieving liberation from the necessity of sustaining either....

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

If one doesn't think life is worth living, then that is probably depression or nihilism, or both. It is fine if one wants to/holds those perspectives then that is their choice. Raining negativity and disparagement on those trying to help others to live, and live free of addiction and suffering, is ...

I was under the impression that this thread is for those people who want to live a life free from the suffering of addiction and what they can do about it.
How does one want to want to live a life free from the suffering of addiction?

I think this is what many addicts are struggling with.

Re: General question about confession of wrong doing.

And would anyone like to share any information or even opinions on why confession should be so valuable? If it is the truthfulness regarding the amended action that is important, is it not enough to be truthful to oneself? On a general note: It makes sense to confess one's transgressions that affec...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

Unfortunately for an addict and alcoholic it is a life or death situation. There is no cutting back or reducing use. You either stop taking the chemicals that are causing problems in your life or you continue to make excuses why you can't stop and gradually lose everything. Recovery cannot begin un...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

On the other hand, I'm uneasy with the idea that there is more to the problem than dealing with problematic behaviours. If we cease those behaviours in body, speech, and mind, might that not simply liberate us and finish the task? In Buddhism, they sometimes say that one actually has to have two pa...

Re: What everyone participating in forums should understand

All I'm saying is that I think that some forum debates tend to get heated and some posters' aim is to criticize others without caring about other peoples' feelings. We should have more loving-kindness in our words as that is more important than proving the other person wrong. The Buddha said: "If a...

Re: Will certain Buddhists on DW please stop disparaging other faiths

I think you are the one drifting away from the original point, as you go along. We were talking about there being no compulsion in religion, and now you take issue with the fact that a country has been invaded. If you do this, always shifting the focus of your accusations to something new, the deba...

Re: How to exercise sense restraint in instances where aversion might arise?

let's be honest: body odour can be pretty disgusting. Should we attempt to not get aversive, or just change carriages? What would you do? Do you step in dog poo? Why not? A smell that one perceives as foul normally indicates that there's something wrong, and that it may be dangerous for one's healt...
