Re: No meta-discussion opens the door to propaganda and irresponsible behavior

I believe that we are free to politely argue against the content of a post, but not the person - there is a big difference. And you believe that all ad personams/ad hominems are always fallacious, despite the arguments against such a generalization presented in the OP? Do you believe that in a reli...

Re: No meta-discussion opens the door to propaganda and irresponsible behavior

I don't have an issue with it. Whether or not their views are hypocritical, I can still judge those views as views, rather than expressions of someone's integrity and intellectual coherence. In fact, even if I find their integrity and intellectual coherence to be lacking, I can still tolerate that....

Re: No meta-discussion opens the door to propaganda and irresponsible behavior

Criticizing others for holding or not holding views would violate TOS: "f. Personal attacks, including the vilification of individuals based on any attributes - whether related to their personal attributes (e.g. gender, nationality, sexuality, race, age) or their approach to the Dhamma (e.g. their ...

Re: The benefits of silence

Have we established that Sam Vara is a fascist? I think a lot of his responses show this to be the case. But, maybe there is some intelligence in his point of view that we don't see? Perhaps the fascist right wing have it right. Are we mistaken? In evolutionary terms, right-wing authoritarianism ge...

Re: Compassion fatigue

Ah yes I have heard this term a lot. My wife is a therapist and this is discussed a lot in her circles. From a dhammic perspective, I would recommend equanimity meditation. Chogyam Trungpa borrowed from Gurdjieff the very useful notion of “idiot compassion.” Gurdjieff, a rather fascinating spiritua...

Not always. I've often found that the mis-match between the image and the reality can give rise to positive states such as "renunciate sadness".
A lay having renunciate sadness??

Re: The benefits of silence

Since you mention it again, where do we get the idea of how people should be? Isn't this a constructed image based on past experiences and memory, a conditioned response? Isn't this the kind of thing that causes dukkha? When the reality doesn't match the image, there is suffering, disappointment, d...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

They followed his directions maps and paths contained in the journals to a tomb full of t...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

If you're saying the untrue is non-functional, I agree. Behind every 'useful fiction' is a true principle which governs the function. But you can think of a useful fiction as something like a proximate cause. If I believe that God punishes evildoers, and abstain from crime as a result - it makes se...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

As long as the practices work, does it even matter? The whole thing could be a complete fiction, but if the practices delivered the end of suffering, it wouldn't matter at all. The concept of "useful fiction" is highly problematic. Even a supposedly useful fiction is still fiction. Relying on somet...

Re: Arguments against the Pali Canon being authentic?

]What are the arguments that suppose that the Pali Canon is not the literal word of The Buddha? Or that there is nothing at all in the Pali Canon that goes back to the Buddha? We can't prove that any statement in the Pali Canon was made by the Buddha, because we don't have any document (for which w...

Re: It is better to stick with people who disagree with you?

Being around people who have different veiws from your own is a great teacher. In what way is that a great teacher? I meant that you learn about yourself. When someone disagrees with you, you generally react to them in some fashion, and this teaches you about your own attachments. It's also a great...
