Re: Diversity among mods

Why? Why not point to the syntax which restricts how you express yourself intelligibly in English? And not being enlightened is also a major restriction of one's free speech! Providing one does not want to violate the ToS, then one's speech is free. Nobody's speech gets moderated providi...

Re: Diversity among mods

you also said the forum has to be complex and we don't need simple Asian monks to participate. It's bad style to misrepresent others. Copy-paste where I said what you're accusing me of. still wondering what an ad hominem post actually is, as many times as I've been accused of it, its still a nothin...

Re: Why so few Western Buddhists?

A matter of interpretation.
For example, if you're feeling particularly generous, you can conceive of the Nazi'ss reason for going to war as simply a matter of economic and territorial gain.

Re: Loneliness

I've noticed when I go to Starbucks it's common to see young people sitting on their own with laptops. Maybe it's technology that's partly to blame for making us antisocial. I think it's Thatcherism (and similar policies) that is a major contributor to people ending up lonely, because of the way th...

Re: Should abusive behaviour by monks and nuns towards lay people be public ally discussed on these forums?

Basically what I’ve said in the title... should we discuss more openly or through private messaging where monks and nuns have acted inappropriately or rudely etc. to laypeople or indeed where we have witnessed monastics being rude to / bullying monastics who are more junior to themselves? I think t...

?
I'm discussing the topic. I'm actually hoping it will help me clarify my own problems that the OP is talking about. It is my experience that such discussion is helpful for me, more helpful than private contemplation.

That's not for no reason. The man provoked the elephant.

Actually no. He was trying to take a photo. He was a local and knew better than to provoke a wild elephant. He seemed to raise his hand and call out to the elephant though (for what reason no one can quite understand).
= provocation.

Re: Which Senior Theravada monks should ideally discuss and explore with each other over which topics?

So I'm the person who unfortunately ruined your day, "airing his grievances" ( Ad Hominem ) about how you don't deserve $500 when you land on "Free Parking". In just the same way, I point at the Dhamma Vinaya, pointing out, to many people's dismay, what the Senior monks are not entitled to by the B...

No, I'm not into the idea that enlightenment or the forum has to be complex and is outside the ability of simple monks.

I don't understand what your point is. You tell a story and fill in how you interpret it. So? See right in the beginning of my post: Seriously, I think there's one important factor to consider, and that is when people seem to blindly adhere to the hierarchy, or when they seem to save face, other in...

Is my speech true and correct? I'd like to think so. Is it beneficial? I'd like to think so (in a longer-term sense), but you don't seem to agree (Binocular), which is your right. Fair enough. Is it "unwelcome and disagreeable"? To many here, probably. Ah. I'd just like to see the matter discussed ...

Take away the threat of eternal damnation, and the whole spiritual quest appears in a new light where neither "blind adherence" nor "one's own investigation and understanding" appear as options, much less as the only two options. I don't quite understand what you mean by this, could you explain fur...

Another important Asian characteristic is the emphasis on the group and non-self rather than the individual, and this is embedded in the languages: http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20171217-why-south-koreans-rarely-use-the-word-me http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-23501757 The question is whether t...

Re: Which Senior Theravada monks should ideally discuss and explore with each other over which topics?

Now that I've spent some time in Asia, I'm seeing that it's actually quite realistic to approach various Vinaya-respecting Theravada monasteries, and they'll let you stay for some time. My life has improved considerably since I decided to start talking this way, which is quite unintuitive. Perhaps ...
