Re: Is it at all possible to get rid of poverty entirely?

Should we accept once and for all that poverty is going to be there .. that it cannot be wiped out entirely? What exactly is so bothersome, so troubling, so offensive about poverty? I think those implicit assumptions need to be brought to the fore and explored first, before one can attempt to think...

One will never know if the monk would regard audience ready or not .
Indeed.
Have you been to any dhamma talk before ?
I've listened to many, but was never personally present for one.

Re: Compassion for Women

Treat women as our mother and sister and as mankind . Develop kindness and compassion , try not to pursuing only material comfort and enjoyment . Excessive self interest leads to selfishness . I'm talking about women hating women. The hatred that women have for women is far worse than anything any ...

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

What does a practice have to do with orderliness? Are you equating repetition with orderliness? Or is orderliness a way of sorting the factual from the fiction of our lives? This part of the conversation is about what is required for the practice of testing and experimenting being meaningful and gi...

But I think it's possible that some practices are suitable for nearly all people, with results immediately visible.
I don't think testing and experimenting is one of them. faith, on the other hand, seems like a more likely candidate.

Re: I have a dream today ~ 2 type of freedom

Looking at a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of salt, I might not recognize which is which. If I want salt and I see the fact of the sugar not being salt, I immediately dismiss the sugar. Fact dismisses illusion, always. Because we don't see things as factual or not, ideas start to predominate. An...

You could try, but he might be interested in why you had more concern for other people's practices than your own.
When those people are in positions of power over me, that changes everything.

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

Anyway, my completely non-controversial point that started this was that people living in chaotic, dysfunctional circumstances cannot meanigfully begin to sort their lives out with testing, experimenting, ie. with methods that require a measure of predictability, regularity. This is not the fault of...

I'm not sure. It doesn't seem likely, but he puts a lot of emphasis on working out what the student's problems and personality are like. He threatened me with it, but didn't follow through!
Maybe then I should give him a nudge.

Re: Doubt, Dhamma and the Middle Way

OK. It doesn't seem orderly to others, who see order in life as planning and predicting so as to ensure regularity. A holy life of wandering and meeting whatever kamma or God throws at you tends to have little regularity, and is very different from (say) Methodism. Again, something that is not sugg...

My Theravadan teacher even said that aspects of his life (tudong, and the going forth in general) were a deliberate attempt to encounter and cultivate an absence of order and predictability.
But he wouldn't advise that to a beginner, would he?

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Just out of interest, were you to be managing a News & Current Events section of a Buddhist forum, what measures would you implement to improve the calibre of discussion, whilst respecting the spiritual and intellectual autonomy of the membership ? That would require to do away with social pressure...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

For all of the people well read in Buddhism here, many people here simply can't handle it. They forget about Right Effort ( getting in and staying in good mental states ) when on the Internet, as if it wasn't part of their existence. It goes in the opposite direction of what they are trying to achi...

Re: I have a dream today ~ 2 type of freedom

If I held on to the illusions, it would indeed short-circuit one's efforts. The action is letting them go. We encounter illusions every day. When they are seen as illusions, not fact, it is automatic that they are let go of. If this is not the case, one is not seeing the fact. These are truisms. It...

Nope , your assumption not correct , you don't know him and the actual situation and this was his perception which is wrong . Why would a monk's perception on this be wrong? You have to understand that both it is mine and it is not mine are conventional usages that don't ultimately stand up. If we don't see this, we end up criticizing everything and it becomes a circular action of habit. Personally, I am not disavowing my own actions and I feel responsible for them. Ye...
