Re: What do the wider Theravadan world think about Goenka?

I spent a long time doing courses and service with the Goenka organisation from 1997. Now I have moved away and can see my opinions of the organisation are mixed, coloured by my experiences. After seeing that monastic settings, with teachers who had a far deeper understanding of Dhamma than most Goe...

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

Yes Cappuchino….I would agree and found that the passage in the book 'Uncommon wisdom' by the highly attained monk, Ajahn Pannavaddho - an English student of Ajahn Maha Bowa in Thailand, concerning all the people with mental illness now - he says it is a consequence of lack of morality...... one of ...

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

....it is worth noting that the arahats (you can check this out by asking arahat Ajahn Suchart through his facebook page), say that only by keeping the 5 precepts can one be assured of not falling into the lower realms in one's next birth. Why do people drink? - to relax and feel pleasant sensations...

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

I am sorry you think that I am dodging the question. This is my last offer - A sotapanna , seeing the harm caused by taking intoxicants would never themselves break the 5th precept and seeing the harm caused - which ordinary people don't see, would never encourage anyone else to harm themselves, and...

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

The fifth precept is to abstain from intoxicants which cloud the mind. Knowing and abstaining oneself - knowing the harm caused by intoxicants, one would never encourage another to drink alcohol

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

Friends in Burma, who have reached this level and beyond - also evidence in the Suttas - but sorry I don't have references ….sure someone else here will . Metta Yes they can have friends who drink alcohol and a lay person who is a Sotapanna could go out for a meal - but they wouldn't break their pre...

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

They probably wouldn't get into that situation in the first place - but always their sense of morality comes first - is unbreakable and to them it wouldn't be awkward …… they would also see the harm caused to themselves by the ones drinking alcohol and no way could they cause anyone to suffer more i...

Re: What you will do after Stream Entry ? (Poll)

my understanding of a Sotapanna - is one who is unable to break the 5 precepts - so drinking alcohol or buying alcohol for others wouldn't apply.....also there are different levels of Sotappanas …….

Re: A review of the book 'A journey to Eternal Peace' by Sayadaw U Sandima of Theinngu32 monastery, Myanmar

At the moment it hasn't been published in English as the translation is not yet finished. It should be available sometime next year. They talked about it being available on Amazon. I also suggested that perhaps they could publish it in instalments ie the finished parts could be published. Now they a...

A review of the book 'A journey to Eternal Peace' by Sayadaw U Sandima of Theinngu32 monastery, Myanmar

I believe this incredible book has the potential to radically change the world. The book is currently in the final stage of being translated from the Burmese language into English. It should be available in English, sometime next year. Having spent some time over the past few years at the monastery ...

Re: Different methods of Vipassana?

Thank you for posting the Theinngu32 method. I can clarify information for you - being the westerner in the photo that is posted here …...Theinngu32 no longer accepts foreigners - or non Burmese speaking students, because of possible misunderstandings in the teachings. Most of what you reported is c...
