Re: What's "Laughing Wisdom" ?
It looks like Maurice Walshe's translation is "joyous and swift in wisdom" https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn55/sn55.024.wlsh.html And Bhikkhu Bodhi's is "joyous wisdom". I don't know near enough Pali to speculate on which one is "best", but at least that fl...

Re: Book about jhana
I found some of his writings that might help bridge the gap! Here he writes about an experience meditating with Pa Auk Sayadaw: http://www.leighb.com/jhana_fr.htm Notable excerpt: "Now I'm not about to claim that what I experienced was the "actual sutta jhanas". What I was doing was c...

Re: Book about jhana
But Brasington acknowledges, or at least he did, that his jhanas are not as deep as what he believes the Buddha's jhanas to be. But he believes to give busy householders a taste of lesser/lighter jhana is better than saying it is nearly impossible for the "real deal." Could you provide a ...

Re: Book about jhana
Use both! They compliment each other well, and are from them same lineage (Ayya Khema was Leigh Brasington's jhana teacher.) I'd say Right Concentration is better used as a practical, instructional guide to the jhanas, and Who Is My Self includes the jhanas within a greater overview of the whole pat...

Re: Sutta study groups?
I have attempted to get something like this going in the Bay Area. Leigh Brasington is based in the Bay Area (though he travels a lot.) It might be worth reaching out to ask him if he knows of anything already running that could be of interest to you. (Leigh is actually the teacher who encouraged m...

Re: Sutta study groups?
My husband is leading one of these right now! :) He just started a few months ago. It's been great so far... I don't doubt that it will be subject to the same ebb and flow that any group endeavor sees over time. But for now, so far so good, and a great spiritual friendship opportunity. For him, seei...

Re: Monasteries in and around California?
I enjoyed a stay at Aloka Vihara last year, and am planning more visits. It's a monastery for Bhikkhunis (fully ordained women) in the Thai Forest tradition, and they accommodate visitors of any gender. It's a beautiful spot bordered (somewhat ironically) by California wineries, and near a forested ...

Re: The Quotable Thanissaro
"The religion is like an elephant with a severed leg. A doctor wants to reattach the leg, even though it has long been dead, and his tools for doing so are contaminated. If the operation goes forward, it will hasten the elephant’s death." - Thanissaro Bhikkhu on the revival of the Bhikkhun...
