Re: Persistent thoughts

It can help to notice the emotional reactions around them, the bodily reactions and bring some spacious awareness to them.

Re: Anatta and Dukkha

Who are we? For as long as we experience as 'we', we speak of 'we'. Even after, it can be convenient to use 'I' and 'we'. Talking about people is talking about something that doesn't exist, so suffering doesn't become someone else's. And if no one is suffering, why is it suffering? Obviously, this ...

Re: Understanding the truth of the dhamma? or convincing oneself of it?

The slightest of all the results coming from drinking fermented & distilled liquors is that, when one becomes a human being, it leads to mental derangement. The slightest of all the results coming from telling falsehoods is that, when one becomes a human being, it leads to being falsely accused. Vi...

Suffering is precisely the lack of this realisation that there is no one suffering. Once we really get it, there is no more suffering.

Re: Starving the defilements

Perhaps an obvious point needs to be made that defilements arise because we believe we enjoy them or consider them important. Typically what we do is we start putting importance on the Dhamma and develop a self-image of a good Buddhist (like in the recent thread) which then comes into conflict with ...

Re: Starving the defilements

What sunnat said agrees more with my experience. For me, at least, it doesn't tend to work to just say 'I will abstain from such and such behaviour', except in a retreat situation or a major change of scenery. What does work is cultivating this attention and spacious awareness around the behavior an...

Re: Understanding the truth of the dhamma? or convincing oneself of it?

I think it is a good question and to riff on James's metaphor, even once on the beach, one can be carried out to see again by the strong samsaric currents, if not careful. To reach the shore is not to fully establish oneself on land. Realisation is something to be maintained but more importantly, in...

Re: Negative thoughts

Recognise all beings as deluded and suffering just like yourself. When we stuff up, or even when we do evil, we are harbouring under a great delusion and suffering a lot. This brings out compassion for all involved.

Re: Why Buddhism is not growing?

It sounds like you think Arthur C. Clarke was a Buddha with psychic powers. The way the world is heading, Judaism will be the only religion to survive by the year 2050. Well, one thing is very sure to me. Jews will take the lead in spreading Buddhism in the world. Can you name a few leadin...

Re: Dhamma that triggers SJWs

Yes, probably unrealistic, but I was trying to bring some balance to the thread by trying to find some suttas that might trigger people who are triggered by the concept of SJW. Why not, you know, end the triggering, and just start shooting, and be done with it? It's interesting that the idea expres...

Re: Poe's Law - Defense

The very fact that threads are taken down which critisize pay-for-play "Dhamma teachers" who charge exorbitant amounts of money to learn "Dhamma" is about as evident as it gets. YES, I know about that.... I don't know what threads you are referring to, but I'd be just as against such a thing as you...

Re: The New Yorker's cartoons fail to cheer me up

I didn't realize I was that depressed because after reading the The New Yorker's cartoon I didn't laugh at all. Nothing happened. I used to like those cartoons so much that I looked forward to them. Well, what is happening now? What did Buddha say about depression? Do you feel joy from other source...

Re: What about drinking Kombucha?

Greetings Sarath, Can you drink Kombucha and drive without exceeding the limit. That probably depends on your local laws. Here in Australia, the standard limit is a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level of 0.05. However, for learners and probationers it's 0.00. These "learners" need to be very careful ...
