Re: Musings about Tantra...

It is maybe unlucky from a modern perspective, that Theravada seems to encompass a picture of women mainly as a danger to spiritual development by leading men astray Why 'unlucky?' :quote: This seems to suggest the Dhamma is somehow incomplete and that it could be improved? Another way we could vie...

Re: Back to self!

According to Buddhism - my illusory notion of self is being asked to understand that the self is an illusion. If I have no self, then who/what is being asked to understand that the self is an illusion? Something or someone is being asked to understand. Who is being asked? :namaste: I've noticed tha...

Re: Dealing with tragedy

How is a Buddhist to deal with great trauma/tragedy and huge, unspeakable amount of stress? Is one to retract and become like a rock? :namaste: Define tragedy. My kids would think their ipad not working is a tragedy and would react less calmly than many practiced individuals would react to losing a...

[...] I checked statistics and indeed things are not as black an white. Islam appearently has a lower than expected retention rate in some place, especially Iran that you mentioned. Appearently it's nr 2 in USA in terms of retention rates after Hinduism: http://www.pewforum.org/2015/05/12/chapter-2...

Re: Theravada is actively growing in the West. What is your take on what the future of that may bring?

If there is any Buddhism in the USA is because of immigration. It was colonial occupation, more than anything else, that began transferring Buddhism to the west. Then it was the intrigue of the intellectuals in both the UK and USA. Then there was the Parliament of World's Religions conference in 18...

Re: Quitting Coffee - my experience

Not sure, but probably so, as chocolate contains some trace amounts of caffeine and some studies have shown dark chocolate is good for the heart too. Would you agree that green tea also is rich in antioxidents and could be a good substitute, though? Green tea is high in antioxidants as well, and ha...

Re: Can we only play not work?

Monks work, the good ones anyway. They do pastoral duties, practice meditation, study suttas, teach meditation, lead programs, chores around the temple including cleaning, etc. Some even get involved in construction, adding an addition to the temple, building a meditation hall or other structures. ...

. Religions that use even stronger mental conditioning than christianity (such as islam) have non-existent conversion rates. If there is any Buddhism in the USA is because of immigration. There is no immigration to Romania other than gypsy crews that traffic humans through the border. I'd be willin...

Re: Wisdom vs will

The first step is right view. Then the will to take the right steps. One starts from the position that there is a 'self'' that needs to be liberated. "And how is right view the forerunner? One discerns wrong view as wrong view, and right view as right view. This is one's right view. And what is wro...

Re: Theravada is actively growing in the West. What is your take on what the future of that may bring?

Just my opinion, but I think the internet can influence people in all countries that have access to it, not just liberal countries. And I have argued that "liberal" countries are really far less liberal than some would believe. There are many crypto-Buddhists in the world, even in places like Saudi ...

Re: Theravada is actively growing in the West. What is your take on what the future of that may bring?

I am not sure if believing in the metaphysical aspects of Buddhism is essential to the practice. I am not saying that disbelieving is necessarily the answer but "suspending judgement" can be good enough. I think it is. I think believing in actual rebirth is essential to Right View. I don't think sa...

A few of the other posters that impress me are the New Zealanders; maybe its because of their warrior Maori spirit. :rolleye: hakka(!) https://www.prints.co.nz/mm5/graphics/00000001/From_mickey_to_tiki_tu_meke_dick_frizzell.jpg https://www.prints.co.nz/page/fine-art/PROD/8217 Mike Only the B...
