How to develop Determination ?

Is there any advice on developing the strength of Determination (Aditthana) in Texts ?

Or, is there any conventional or widely used technique to develop Determination ?

Re: Not self - Ven. Yuttadhammo got it wrong too?

If one says like below, then is it correct ?
  • Nothing can be controlled as you wish
  • Nothing can be fully controlled
  • Nothing can be kept under control permanently
  • Nothing can be controlled without suffering
  • Things go out-of-control unexpectedly

Re: For Monks Only: travelling by vehicles

Some says the word 'yana' means only the vehicles which are drawn by a sentient being. (eg: carts)
They say modern cars, air planes are included in ship category because they are not drawn by a sentient being.
water-ships: ships, boats
earth-ships: cars, busses
air-ships: planes, helicopters

Re: What are you always getting ready for ?

Merits do not accrue also to those who adhere to wrong views,
which are comparable to a citadel within the city of samsara,
or to a parasitic root which throws out a flush of sprouts in the bush of evil deeds,
or to poisonous thorns on the pathway to heaven and Nibbana.

For Monks Only: travelling by vehicles

Dear venerable,

"Na bhikkhave yanena yai tabbam"

The Buddha has allowed travelling by vehicle only for the sick monks.
What exactly does this word 'yana' mean here?
(Normally yana means vehicle)

Ship is allowed.
Cart is not allowed.
Car ??
Plane ??

Re: Meetings with a Remarkable Monk

How ven. Nanadipa had seen ven. Nanavimala: During my stay with him as an upāsaka (layman) in ’68 and as a sāmaṇera (novice monk) in ’69, he was the only inspiring model I had. What inspired me, however, was the sight of him rather than the Dhamma (teachings) he spoke. In those days he was very rese...

Re: What are you always getting ready for ?

To me, it sounds like dualistic egoism, where the body is separated from the soul or mind. .. There is no " you " doing this. Getting stuck with words is not appreciated by the wise. We should be wise enough to distinguish the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. If what you are saying is tru...

What are you always getting ready for ?

For what are you always getting ready- eating and drinking and adorning yourself? Where are you going to take this body? Be diligent at all times in doing merits. Isn't that what takes you beyond the ocean of existence? (Lo-wáda Sangarava' - A poem of the 15th century by Venerable Vidagama Maitreya...

Re: Discouraging and Encouraging Bhikkhuni Ordination

Previously I thought you seem to be an extremist/modernist/marxist/feminist. Being anti-extremist/anti-modernist/anti-marxist/anti-feminist does not mean Dhamma is understood. What about anti-anti-extremist/ anti-anti-modernist/ anti-anti-marxist/ anti-anti-feminist ?? Does being such a one mean Dh...

Dhamma cannot be realized by a logical approach.
Possibly. But Dhamma can't be realised by an illogical approach, either; nor by Tibetan-style guru personality worship. :alien:
I agree.

Isn't this the case with any other virtue and true of any other country?
Yes. The purpose of this thread was to identify the drawbacks of a particular approach to Buddhism. Obviously other approaches have their own drawbacks, too.

Re: Will you disregard Dukkha saying it is a later addition

Again, how so? Why should scholars disregarding part of the canon result in the unavailability of that part for others? Accessing material from the Pali Canon is completely unaffected by whether particular individuals regard it or not. The majority of people gain access to the Dhamma by reading the...

Re: Discouraging and Encouraging Bhikkhuni Ordination

Obviously, the people concerned - strongly encouraging bhikkhuni ordination - think that their intentions are genuinely good. It looks to me as if they are bandwagon-jumping, virtue-signalling, or just reacting due to prejudices they carry around. If it furthers the cause of female equality in any ...

Re: Series of Talks on Ven. Ñāṇavīra Thera's “Notes on Dhamma”

Ven. Nanadipa was quite interested in studying the letters and notes on Dhamma which Nanavira had left behind in his kuti and later made into a book called, Clearing the Path. In these letters to friends he had discussed his dilemma. However at these first meetings with Ven. Nanadipa we did not dis...
