Re: crypto-buddhist hindu stuff?

you don't have to have any attainment to teach.
better for someone to hear the dhamma from a third party than not at all
my point here is that i dont support hinduism and i dont want to lend any support to it

crypto-buddhist hindu stuff?

I decided to try to volunteer for a letter-writing program to prisoners, but it turns out to be a little different from what I expected. I was assigned two letters, one was by a self-identified Hindu who lacks access to information about his religion and who is looking to receive mantras and images....

Re: is a monk allowed to handle a check?

On a side-note. A monk is allowed to handle money or gold and silver, indeed he is obliged to, in this case: A lay person drops or leaves some money or other valuables (e.g. a mobile phone or jewellery) in the vihāra or in the monastery compound. A monk must pick it up, and keep it in a safe place,...

is a monk allowed to handle a check?

it might be obvious that a check addressed to a monk's personal bank account is a problem, but what if a monk is handed a check to pass along to whoever is in charge of finances at their vihāra? or what if a monk is in charge of their vihāra's finances? please include scriptural references

Need some further clarification of wrong livelihood

I have been thru some of the older threads on the issue what is wrong livelihood and do not feel as if I have a clear answer on this topic. I will ask about a job I am considering applying to as an example. It is for a receptionist at a pest control company. I don't have any desire to support the pe...

I recommend https://www.ancient-buddhist-texts.net/ ... ipatthana/
Because you don't have to be interested in Buddhism in order to learn from a sutta

Re: Is Buddhism strictly monogamous?

Suppose a householder or householder's son has a house with a gabled roof, plastered inside & out, draft-free, with close-fitting door & windows shut against the wind. Inside he has a horse-hair couch spread with a long-fleeced coverlet, a white wool coverlet, an embroidered coverlet, a rug of kada...

Re: Is Buddhism strictly monogamous?

Then Queen Mallika went to King Pasenadi Kosala and on arrival said to him, "What do you think, great king: Is Princess Vajiri dear to you?" "Yes, Mallika, Princess Vajiri is dear to me." "And what do you think: would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair arise in you from any change & abe...

Re: Let's emulate the Arahants, let's make everyday an "Uposatha day"

why is it someone talks about their eagerness to keep strong sīla and their recommendation to do so and they get accused of being boastful, thats just not what this appears to be. i've had it happen to me too, i dont care about better or worse, i want the fruits of great practice. the more people ke...
