Re: online Dhamma Q&A/Discussion with Ven. Mahaviveka

Probably used to being worshiped by laypeople & averse to being challenged (unlike the Buddha). [/quote] At least it's good you say "probably"! :) You can challenge him anytime you like by email or on Jitsi where we meet regularly (not to challenge each other though, more to learn from each other)....

I skipped straight to the sections on Iddhipādā and Sammappadhānā, 6.1 and 6.2.
Yes chapter 6 is my favorite too. I also liked 2.2 Self-Stimulation (Bhava-Tanhā) and 2.3 Depression (Vibhava-Tanhā). and chpter 5 about meditation and 5.4 Self-Awareness (Sati & Pañña). I didn't skip! :)

Re: Where is iddhi?

What does iddhi mean? Ven. Mahaviveka said in his book that it a definition of "motivation" with nothing to do with superpower. Here: "The Pāli expression iddhi-pādā suggests: "enabling, empowering, or effective foundations." These foundations refer in totality to the necessary kind of motivation u...

Re: is pāḷi a sacred language?

A Sri Lankan monk once told me that Pali was a special superior language which had the effect of improving the mental state of whoever used it or even listened to it... Deja Vu! A Sri Lankan monk once told me that the Pali is the root language of all languages. And, a baby will speak Pali if he was...

Re: is pāḷi a sacred language?

"It is widely accepted that the Pali texts have been standardized from an earlier version (or versions) in Magadhan." http://qr.ae/TUTvtR allowable does not by itself imply that pali isnt superior I think we can't make this argument until we find the older Magadhi to compare Pali to. For now Pali i...

Re: Unofficial Ebook for Digha Nikaya and Majjhima Nikaya from Bhante Sujato

Thanks for sharing these files. Probably best to leave untranslated. Yes, that's what I argued, but he was keen on an all-English text, except for the few crazy-difficult terms. That's always the problem, leaving it untranslated is good for people who already know about it, but very bad for new read...

Re: How to say "Thank You"

OK so if the person being thanked has done something meritorious it's "anumodanā." That sounds like a bigger thank you than I'm considering. usually for this we say "sadhu". for thanking someone who told you directions in the street it's possible to say "anumodami". this is the closest thing to the...
