Re: Death and Separation
Many thanks for the kind comment; how do you feel when you see birthday party clips, photographs etc? Do you feel sad? Hi Emma. The way it has worked for me is that initially (during the period of grief), there is nothing positive that I could recollected at all. Maybe that is in fact the definitio...

Re: Death and Separation
Both of my parents and the 'love of my life' have all died. To tell you the truth, it's all been incredibly freeing. Before they died, I always feared that the 'worst would happen'. Now that the worst actually has happened, what is there to worry about? Don't get me wrong, there was a fair amount of...

:anjali: Hi Claire, Do you mean "evolution by natural selection" as taught in some schools today which has itself evolved from the "evolution by natural selection" that Charles Darwin stated in The Origin of the Species? ... ;) .... ... just kidding .... .... but the serious poin...

Re: Some advice needed please
When the time comes that her suffering is insurmountable and she is terminal then I will do what is best for her, "my" kamma be damned. I love her too much to let her writhe in pain in a terminal situation over concerns for "my" outcome. If I have to burn in hell to alleviate he...

Re: case of consciousness about copyrights
Hi Dukkhanirodha :anjali: , I have rather unorthodox view (for a Buddhist) of copyright .... there was no copyright laws in the time of the Buddha, as far as I'm aware. I think that infringing copyright is no more wrong than taking a photograph of someone without asking their permission - it's a bit...

Re: Marriage to non-Buddhists
:anjali: nausauketman, I agreed when we first married 28 years ago to become a Catholic as I didn't take spiritual matters that seriously then. Have you been baptised into the catholic church? If so you might wish to ask your wife to contemplate the following catechism 1272 Incorporated into Christ ...

Re: Tathgatas' teaching constantly available...?
... in higher realms? For devas of Four great Kings, the Buddha died less than two months ago. In Tavatimsa, it was less than a month ago. In Yama, less than two weeks. In tusita, less than a week. In the ones who delight in creation, about 3 days back. In the ones who control others' creations, da...

Re: Place of plants in the order of beings
Could it be possible that the Buddha prohibits monks from harming plant because having monks going around damaging plants (some of which were planted and tended even though it might not be obvious to a monk) would be a nuisance to a person or community and in general set a bad example for everyone ...

Re: Place of plants in the order of beings
I understand, but the point for me was rather to know whether a particular being has a chance to become enlightened some time in the future or not. :anjali: Hi Dukkhanirodha :anjali: I think that the idea that a "being" :quote: becomes enlightened may be a misunderstanding. There is certa...

Re: Is there such a thing as unintentional thoughts?
There was a time when I was thinking a lot of unwholesome thoughts, I mean I would be sitting there meditating and a whole host of really nasty things would come up. I was getting quite upset. Anyway I went and asked Venerable Dhammajiva how to put an end to this papanca and he said something along...
